Honour Values, and Change in WWII in Evelyn Waugh's "Sword of Honour" Trilogy

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tím, jak Evelyn Waugh vnímá koncept cti a měnící se tradiční hodnoty v kontextu druhé světové války, a jakým způsobem je prezentuje ve své válečné trilogii Sword of Honour. Středem zájmu této práce jsou změny v britské společnosti v souvislosti s vnímáním konceptu cti, morálních hodnot a subjektivity šlechetného a opovrženíhodného chování. Následně tato práce porovnává obecný koncept cti s konceptem individuálním, jak je vnímají jednotlivé postavy. Práce dále analyzuje, jak mizející paradigma tradičních hodnot vytváří v průběhu druhé světové války společenský chaos, v němž absence jasně definovaných hodnot a morálky má přímý a radikální dopad na postavy trilogie. Dále se analýzy zabývá ústřední postavou Guye Crouchbacka a jeho přeměnou vnímání hodnot. Tradiční koncept cti, který je spojen s romantickou iluzí chrabrého rytířského činu, vykonaného pro potřeby obrany země, se přetváří do nového konceptu, spojeného s reálným činem nesobeckého obětování se pro záchranu jediné osoby. Závěr práce vysvětluje, jakým způsobem Waugh prostřednictvím své hlavní postavy prezentuje svůj osobní postoj ke konceptu cti a jakým způsobem je podložen jeho katolickou vírou.

Abstract:

This thesis considers aspects of Evelyn Waugh´s attitudes and dramatization of changing values in the context of World War II as presented in Waugh’s trilogy Sword of Honour by the means of detailed reading and analysis of the characters´ behaviour, motivations and plot development in .The focus of the thesis is on the changes in the British society in connection to the notions of honour values, moral values, subjectivity of noble and ignoble behaviour and the comparison and contrasting of the general code of honour as opposed to an individual perception of what this entails. The core area of my analysis are the characters´ own notions of what is perceived as honourable in contrast to what is accepted by the society and how the disappearing paradigm of traditional values creates a social disorder in which the absence of clearly defined values and morale has a direct and radical impact on the characters. The thesis analyzes the main character Guy Crouchback and the shift in his perception of values from a traditional concept of honour in regards to a romantic illusion of a chivalry act of honour executed for the needs of his country into a realistic act of unselfish sacrifices executed for the needs of an individual. The conclusion of the thesis examines how Waugh demonstrated his concept of honour in the character of Guy Crouchback and how it was built upon his Roman Catholic faith.
