Terry Pratchett's "Hogfather" and its Czech and German Translations

Abstract:

This master thesis on “Terry Pratchett's "Hogfather" and its Czech and German Translations” is concerned with the novel “Hogfather” by the British author Sir Terry Pratchett and its translations into Czech and German. First of all, the author himself is introduced as well as both of the translators – Jan Kantůrek for the Czech Republic and Andreas Brandhorst for Germany. Furtheron, brief information are provided about the novel saga of the Fantastic Discworld, to which the novel “Hogfather” belongs, and about the novel “Hogfather” itself. The main part of the thesis consists of a comparative translatological analysis of the Czech and of the German translations, which focuses on proper names, deflections from standard language, language humour and on distinguishing between the formal and informal form of address in the translations.

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce s názvem „Terry Pratchetts "Hogfather" und seine deutsche und tschechische Übersetzungen“ se zabývá románem „Hogfather“ od britského spisovatele Sira Terryho Pratchetta a jeho překlady do českého a do německého jazyka. Nejdříve je představen jak autor sám, tak oba dva překladatelé – Jan Kantůrek za Českou republiku a Andreas Brandhorst za Německo. Dále jsou podány stručné informace o románové řadě o Úžasné Zeměploše, jíž je „Hogfather“ součástí, tak o románu „Hogfather“ samotném. Hlavní část práce potom představuje komparativní translatologická analýza českého a německého překladu, a to se zaměřením na vlastní jména a názvy, odchylky od spisovného jazyka, jazykový humor a rozlišování mezi tykáním a vykáním v překladech.
