Small states in UN peacekeeping operations - the case of the Czech republic, Slovakia and the Netherlands

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou participace vybraných evropských zemí spadajících do kategorie tzv. malých států („small states“) na operacích OSN na udržení míru v letech 1990-2016. Konkrétně byly pro potřeby tohoto výzkumu vzhledem k jejich charakteristice a odlišném přístupu k těmto operacím zvoleny tři případové studie - Česká republika, Slovenská republika a Nizozemí. Hlavním cílem práce pak je na pozadí již zmíněného konceptu malého státu a jeho působení v mezinárodních vztazích analyzovat a následně komparovat zapojení zvolených aktérů do operací OSN na udržení míru. Autorka se detailně věnuje bezpečnostním politikám daných zemí, popisu strategií jejich participace na těchto operacích, a objasňuje, jaké důvody je vedou k jejich chování na poli participace na udržování míru OSN s ohledem na charakteristiky, které z konceptu malého státu vyplývají. Metodologicky je analýza postavena na komparativní případové studii s využitím Millových metod, kde jsou zkoumané případy podrobeny srovnávací analýze.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis describes the participation of small European states in UN peacekeeping operations from 1990 to 2016. Based on their characteristics and different approaches towards these operations, the Czech republic, Slovakia and the Netherlands were chosen to represent three main case studies used in this research. Main goal of this thesis is to analyse and compare factual troop contributions of these three countries to UN peacekeeping operations with regard to the concept of small state and its role in international relations. The analytical part thus deals with security policies of given states, their strategies towards UN peacekeeping and also motives why these small states decided to participate in UN peacekeeping operations. Methodologically, this paper is based on comparative case studies using Mill’s method of difference that allows three case studies (Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Netherlands) to be compared and analysed in rich detail. At the same time, method of difference helps us to find out why their contributions differ.
