The Analysis of Jihadist Insurgency in the Sahel

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na džihádistické povstalectví v Sahelu mezi lety 2015 a 2019. Předmětem výzkumu je džihádistické hnutí tvořené sedmi aktivními džihádistickými skupinami, které operují v Mali, Burkině Faso a západním Nigeru. Cílem tohoto výzkumu je objasnit džihádistické povstalectví v regionu, vymezit v něm jednotlivé džihádistické skupiny, vysvětlit vzorce chování a interakce mezi skupinami a stanovit důvody, které stojí za dosavadní jednotou džihádistického hnutí. K naplnění cíle diplomové práce autor pracuje v první části s P. Williamsovou (2008) typologií nestátních násilných ozbrojených aktérů, dle které vytvořil podrobné profily jednotlivých džihádistických skupin. Ve druhé části práce autor vysvětluje vzorce chování džihádistických skupin a interpretuje realitu zkoumaného povstalectví podle teoretického konceptu S. T. Zecha a M. Gabbaye (2016). Ti využívají síťovou analýzu ke studiu chování teroristických a povstaleckých skupin v rámci specifických ozbrojených konfliktů.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the jihadist insurgency in the Sahel between 2015 and 2019. The subject of the research is the jihadist movement consisting of seven active jihadist groups operating in Mali, Burkina Faso and western Niger. The aim of this research is to clarify the jihadist insurgency in the region, to identify the individual jihadist groups, to explain patterns of behavior and interactions among them, and to identify the reasons behind the unity of the jihadist movement up to now. To achieve the goals of the thesis, the author uses in the first part P. Williams's (2008) typology of non-state violent armed actors, in order to create in-depth profiles of individual jihadist groups. In the second part of the work the author explains the behavioural patterns of jihadist groups and interprets the reality of the insurgency according to the theoretical concept of S. T. Zech and M. Gabbay (2016). They use social network analysis to study the behavior of terrorist and rebel groups in a specific armed conflicts.
