Academic Writing in Theory and Practice: An Academic Text From the Point of View of Dutch and Czech Stylistics

Abstract:

Centrální otázka této práce zní: Jaké znaky má z pohledu nizozemské a české stylistiky text, který je považován za „dobře napsaný odborný text“? V úvodu práce uvádím kromě centrální otázky také svou hypotézu, tj. předpoklad, že mezi nizozemským a českým pojetím stylistiky jako jazykovědné disciplíny existují značné rozdíly. Cílem mé práce bylo tuto hypotézu buď potvrdit, anebo vyvrátit, a najít na centrální otázku odpověď. Za tímto účelem jsem se nejprve zaměřila na porovnání definic stylu a stylistiky obecně. Poté jsem věnovala pozornost stylu odbornému. Zkoumala jsem, na co se v dílech, která o něm pojednávají, klade důraz a jaké jsou v jednotlivých jazykových oblastech požadavky na strukturu odborných textů. Tímto způsobem se mi podařilo získat odpověď na centrální otázku. Potvrdilo se, že moje hypotéza byla správná: mezi nizozemským a českým pojetím stylistiky existují značné rozdíly. Nizozemská stylistika je praktická a empirická disciplína, zatímco česká stylistika je založením teoretická a popisná. Praktické zaměření nizozemské stylistiky je poté patrné i v příručkách a průvodcích pro psaní odborných textů: kladou důraz na proces psaní a nabádají budoucího autora k tomu, aby text především logicky a přehledně obsahově strukturoval. Autor by měl stále brát ohled na příjemce textu, neboť text se stává skutečným textem až tehdy, když je čten. Autor by se tedy měl neustále sám sebe ptát, zda je jeho text logický a pro čtenáře dobře srozumitelný. Česká díla o stylistice mají naproti tomu především teoretický a popisný charakter. Teprve v posledních letech se i čeští badatelé na poli stylistiky začínají zaměřovat na praktickou stránku věci. Na českém území tedy vyšly první příručky praktického charakteru. Jejich autoři čerpají inspiraci v zahraničí, obzvláště v anglosaském světě.

Abstract:

The central question of this Bachelor Diploma Thesis sounds: Which features has a text which is from the point of view of Dutch and Czech stylistics considered a “well-written academic text”? In the Introduction I formulate a hypothesis that there are considerable differences between the Dutch and Czech conception of stylistics as a linguistic discipline. The goal of the thesis was to confirm or disprove the hypothesis, and to answer the central question. To this end, I firstly focused on the comparison of definitions of style and stylistics in general. Subsequently, the centre of my attention was the style of academic writing. I researched what the works dealing with such topic put most emphasis on and what the requirements for the structure of academic texts are. This research that I carried out helped me to answer my central question. The hypothesis proved to be correct: there do exist considerable differences between the Dutch and Czech conception of stylistics. Dutch stylistics is a practical and empirical discipline whereas the approach of Czech stylistics is theoretical and descriptive. The practical orientation of Dutch stylistics manifests itself in handbooks and guides on academic writing. The emphasis is being put mainly on the writing process. The author-to-be is encouraged and urged on to structure their text logically and transparently as far as the contents are concerned. The author is also advised to think of the recipient of their text for a text truly becomes a text only when being read. Therefore, the author-to-be should ask themselves continually whether their text is clear and easy to understand for the reader. On the other hand, the Czech works on stylistics are rather of theoretical and descriptive character. Only in the last years have Czech scholars on the field of stylistics begun to show interest in the practical aspects. Consequently, there have appeared first practical handbooks on writing in the Czech Republic as well. Their authors seek inspiration abroad, in the Anglo-American world in particular.
