The defining features of climate fiction and its possible effect on the reader

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce je věnována literárním dílům tzv. klimatické fikce reflektujícím problematiku klimatické změny a potřeby redefinice přístupu ke vztahu lidstva a přírody. Cílem práce je především co nejpřesnější vymezení a charakteristika této specifické skupiny děl. Teoretické poznatky týkající se literatury cli-fi jsou doplněny ekokritickou analýzou tří románů – Prachožrouti a Potopená města P. Bacigalupiho a New York 2140 K. S. Robinsona. V neposlední řadě se text zabývá otázkou, do jaké míry a jestli vůbec může tento typ literatury přispět k lepšímu kognitivnímu uchopení fenoménu změny klimatu u svých čtenářů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with literary works of so-called climate fiction reflecting the issue of climate change and the need for a new approach to the relationship between humanity and nature. The main goal of the thesis is to define and characterize this specific group of works as precisely as possible. Theoretical knowledge regarding cli-fi literature is supplemented by an ecocritical analysis of three novels – Ship Breaker and Drowned Cities by P. Bacigalupi and New York 2140 by K. S. Robinson. Last but not least, the text addresses the question if, and to what degree this type of literature can contribute to a better cognitive understanding of the phenomenon of climate change among its readers.
