Travelling Women and the Journeys of the Self in the Aritha van Herk’s Places Far from Ellesmere, No Fixed Address and Restlessness

Abstract:

Cílem mojí bakalářské práce je analyzovat koncept ženských cestovatelek ve fikční literatuře Arithy van Herk: Places Far from Ellesmere (1990), Restlessness (1990) a No Fixed Address (1986). Práce se zaměřuje na zacházení autorky s hlavními postavami v těchto knihách. Ačkoliv se příběhy hrdinek liší, lze v nich pozorovat jisté společné prvky a paralely ženských cestopisných narativů. Mým záměrem je poukázat na tyto prominentní prvky, zformulovat jejich hlavní rysy a analyzovat je z pohledu tohoto žánru. Důraz je kladen na proces sebepoznávání a na cestu jako takovou je nahlíženo jako na nástroj, který umožňuje spuštění tohoto procesu. Práce je rozdělená do pěti kapitol, přičemž všechny jsou založeny na textové analýze a komparaci hlavních ženských postav bezejmenné vypravěčky v Places Far from Ellesmere, Dorcas v Restlessness a Arachne v No Fixed Address. První kapitola je kapitolou úvodní. Druhá kapitola se soustřeďuje na postavu ženy cestovatelky z perspektivy žánru cestopisných narativů, přičemž krátce pojednává o tradici tohoto žánru, ale především se věnuje charakteristikám a motivům ženských cestovatelek. Třetí kapitola se věnuje tématům domova a sebeurčení. Důraz je kladen na provázanost těchto dvou témat, jejich důležitost pro ženy cestovatelky a jejich vnímání cesty jako nástroje pro sebepoznání a zprostředkování naděje. Čtvrtá kapitola se zaměřuje na téma smíření se s minulostí, a nebo útěku od ní, přičemž cesta může sloužit jako prostředek pro dosáhnutí obojího. Závěr práce klade důraz na porovnávací analýzu, která je založená na předchozích čtyřech kapitolách a zdůrazňuje podobnosti mezi hlavními ženskými postavami a shrnuje nejvýznamnější společné rysy.

Abstract:

The purpose of my Bachelor’s Thesis is to analyze the concept of women travellers in the fiction by Aritha van Herk: Places Far from Ellesmere (1990), Restlessness (1990) and No Fixed Address (1986). The thesis focuses on the van Herk’s treatment of her main female characters in these novels. Each story is different, however all of them can be perceived as containing certain similarities and parallels of the women’s travel narratives. The aim of my thesis is to point out to these prominent features of the travel writing in van Herk’s novels and analyze the selected themes from the perspective of this genre. While the emphasis will be put on the exploration of the self of a female traveller, the travel will be discussed as a powerful means for self-development. The thesis is divided into five chapters based on the textual analysis and comparison of the main women characters the nameless narrator in Places Far from Ellesmere, Dorcas in Restlessness and Arachne in No Fixed Address. The first chapter is introductory. The second chapter concentrates on the figure of the woman traveller from the perspective of the genre of travel writing, touching briefly upon its tradition but main focus is put on characteristics and motivations of female travellers. The third chapter is dedicated to the themes of home and the self, examining the connection of home and the ‘self’, its importance for women travellers and their perception of travel as a means of self-discovery and a mediator of hope. The fourth chapter deals with the themes of reconciliation with the past or escaping it, both mediated by the act of travel. The conclusion consists largely of a comparative analysis based on these four chapters and highlights similarities between the heroines, summarizing their main common features.
