Elements of Weird Fiction in J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy

Anotace:

Tato práce analyzuje prvky weird fiction v Tolkienově trilogii Pán prstenů. Práce se zabývá historickým kontextem a tím, jak se mohl odrazit v tvorbě Tolkiena a autorů žánru weird fiction, a také zkoumá to, zda Tolkienova tvorba mohla být tímto žánrem ovlivněna. Ve čtvrté kapitole jsou analyzovány charakteristické prvky weird fiction, které je možno nalézt v Pánovi prstenů; tato kapitola také argumentuje, že Tolkienův nedokončený román The Notion Club Papers lze považovat za příklad weird fiction literatury.

Abstract:

This Bachelor’s Thesis analyses elements of weird fiction literature in J. R. R. Tolkien’s trilogy The Lord of the Rings. This work examines the historical context and how it could have influenced both Tolkien and authors of weird fiction; it also researches whether Tolkien was familiar with the genre and if his writing could have been influenced by it. Chapter four of this work is dedicated to literary analysis of elements typical for weird fiction that are present in The Lord of the Rings; it also analyses Tolkien’s unfinished novel The Notion Club Papers and argues that it can be considered a weird tale.
