The Self – loathing Discourse in the Theme of Modernisation in the Chinese Literature of the 20th Century

Anotace:

Témou tejto diplomovej práce je diskurz sebaodporu v téme modernizácie v čínskej literatúre 20. storočia. Hlavnou otázkou je ako je diskurz sebaodporu spracovaný vo vybraných dielach z 20. storočia a ako sa počas storočia mení. Táto práca je rozdelená na štyri kapitoly. Prvé dve kapitoly tvoria teoretický základ pre analýzu tretej a štvrtej kapitoly. V tretej kapitole sú analyzované konkrétne príklady sebaodporu, ktoré boli nájdené v literárnych dielach. Tretia kapitola odpovedá na otázku ako autori spracovávajú diskurz sebaodporu vo svojich dielach. Príklady nájdené v tretej kapitole slúžia v štvrtej kapitole na definovanie dôvodov pre ktoré autor spracoval sebaodpor. Posledná kapitola sa zameriava na definovanie a pochopenie vývoja diskurzu sebaodporu počas 20. storočia. V závere argumentujem, že diskurz sebaodporu je počas 20. storočia stále prítomný, ale jeho dôvody sa menia a vyvíjajú. Tradícia sebaodporu pokračuje aj do 21. storočia, čo naznačuje, že podľa Číňanov sa čínska spoločnosť stále potrebuje zlepšiť a zmeniť.

Abstract:

This thesis elaborates the discourse of self-loathing in the theme of modernisation in the 20th century Chinese literature. The main question is how the discourse of self-loathing is elaborated in chosen works from the 20th century and how is it evolving during this century. This works is divided into four chapters. The first two chapters create a theoretical base for the analysis of the third and fourth chapter. In the third chapter are analysed the concrete examples of self-loathing found in the literature works. This chapter answers the question how authors elaborate the discourse of self-loathing in their works. The examples from the third chapter are used in the fourth chapter to define the reasons for authors´ elaboration of self-loathing. The focus of the last chapter is to define and to understand the evolution of self-loathing discourse during the 20th century. Finally, I argue that the discourse of self-loathing is constantly present during the 20th century, however, the reasons change and evolve. The tradition of self-loathing continues to the 21st century, which suggests that the Chinese society still needs to improve and change according to Chinese themselves.
