Rostliny musí rychle reagovat na mnoho stresových faktorů prostředí, to je možné díky celé řadě interních signalizačních mechanismů. Dostupnost dusíku (N) v přírodě často kolísá, nedostatek N je významný stresový faktor vedoucí k omezení výměny plynů rostliny s prostředím, a následně také ke zpomalení růstu. Plants have to respond quickly to many environmental stress factors, this is made possible by a number of internal signalling mechanisms. The availability of nitrogen (N) in nature often fluctuates, and N deficiency is a significant stress factor leading to a reduction in the plant's gas exchange with the environment, and consequently to a slowing of growth.
