Present Tense and Imperative in Modern Czech

Abstract:

V dané práci zkoumám morfosyntax a fonologii prézentu a imperativu současné češtiny. Vycházím z tradiční klasifikace sloves z Mluvnice češtiny 2 (1986), dále představuju model distribuované morfologie (DM). DM nabízí teorii gramatiky, do jejíž architektury implementuju teorii fonologické reprezentace CVCV. Separování morfologické a čistě fonologické informace do různých míst v architektuře umožňuje zachytit jevy, které odolávají popisu využívajícímu jen empiricky pozorovatelné entity. Z morfosyntaktického hlediska je prézens definován jako komplexní hlava obsahující hlavy √, v, VOICE, ASP a T a imperativ jako defektivní komplexní hlava sestávající z √, v, ASP a C. V morfologickém komponentu dochází k vložení hlavy AGR(EEMENT), která je v prézentní struktuře sloučena s T a v imperativní struktuře s C. Fonologický materiál se objevuje až po dokončení morfosyntaktické derivace, načež je konkatenovaný řetězec interpretován ve zvláštním fonologickém komponentu. Flexe a thémata mají různou autosegmentální reprezentaci, což umožňuje zachytit tzv. Jakobsonovo pravidlo jako epifenomén intersylabických vztahů. Aplikace teorie elementů na melodickou rovinu dovoluje analyzovat imperativní tvary bez kořenové alomorfie.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the morphosyntax and phonology of the Modern Czech present tense and imperative. I start with a traditional classification based on Grammar of Czech 2 (1986) and then I proceed to Distributed Morphology (DM) model. DM is a theory of grammar and I implement CVCV, a theory of phonological representation, in its architecture. Separation of the morphological and purely phonological information to different loci of the architecture of grammar enables to capture phenomena which resist description which is using only the empirically observable entities. From morphosyntactic point of view, the present tense is defined as a complex head consisting of √, v, VOICE, ASP and T and the imperative as a defective complex head only consisting of √, v, ASP and C. In the morphological component, the AGR(EEMENT)-head is inserted. In the present tense structure, AGR is merged with T and in the imperative structure, it is merged with C. The phonological material appears after the morphosyntactic derivation is finished. Then, the concatenated string is interpreted in a specific phonological component. Inflectional and thematic suffixes have different autosegmental representation. It allows to capture Jakobson’s Law as an epiphenomenon of the intersyllabic relations. On the melodic tier, the application of the Element Theory enables to analyse imperative forms without using root allomorphy.
