Definitions of Urban Sprawl, and Possibilities of Geographical Monitoring of its Teritorial Impacts in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Práce se skládá ze dvou částí: První část shromažďuje a studuje různé definice a typické charakteristiky jevu urban sprawl, které se vyskytují ve světové i tuzemské odborné literatuře. Součástí studia je diskuse a srovnávání definic a typických charakteristik, a to rovněž v kontextu pojmu suburbanizace. Práce systematizovala 22 průnikových charakteristik ve 3 skupinách (intenzita, lokalizace a morfologie). Výstupem je průnik definic, který současně představuje vnitřně konzistentní definici jevu urban sprawl, kterou lze použít v podmínkách České republiky. Druhá část práce zkoumá dostupnost statistických a prostorových dat, jimiž by v České republice bylo možné popsat prostorové projevy urban sprawl. Na základě předtím zpracované definice, typických charakteristik a dostupných dat práce navr-huje geograficky co nejpřesnější metodiku (postup) měření výskytu, rozsahu a měři-telných vlastností zástavby typu urban sprawl. Úvod postupu zahrnuje vyhledání několika set lokalit na základě statistických dat, další zpracování probíhá v prostředí GIS. Ověření navrženého postupu však již, s ohledem na jeho časovou náročnost, není obsahem práce.

Abstract:

The work consists of two parts. The first part collects and studies the various definitions and characteristics of a typical phenomenon of urban sprawl that occur in Czech and world literature. The study is a discussion and comparison of definitions and typical characteristics, and also in the context of the concept of suburbanization. I have systematized 22 penetration characteristics in 3 groups (intensity, localization and morphology). The output is the intersection of definitions, which currently is internally consistent definition of the phenomenon of urban sprawl, which can be used in the Czech Republic. The second part examines the availability of statistical and spatial data, which in the Czech Republic would be able to describe the spatial manifestations of urban sprawl. Based on previously processed definition, on the typical characteristics and on the available data and literature, the thesis proposes possible method of measuring the existence of the urban sprawl areas, its extent and some of its measurable characteristics. The proposed process includes a search-mission of several hundred sites on the basis of statistical data, further processing takes place in the GIS-environment. However, the verification of the proposed method is not the part of the thesis, because the method is too exigent.
