Undemocratic reaction to the Color revolutions

Abstract:

In the period between the years 2000 and 2005, the Postcommunist region was conducted by series of events, which are commonly labeled as “Color revolutions”. These events proved to be effective to take down governments in non democratic regimes in Serbia (Bulldozer revolution), Georgia (Rose revolution), Kirgizstan (Tulip revolution) and Ukraine (Orange revolution). Although, following faith and optimism in finding universal key to democratization of Postcommunist region has disappeared, because non democratic regimes identified attributes and techniques of used concept of Color revolutions, based on which regimes were able to prepare preemptive action to suppress this threat. The master´s thesis is focused on reaction by non democratic regimes on the threat represented by Color revolutions. We will progressively introduce concept of Color revolutions in the wider frame of Theory of democratization with particular focus on transitologist paradigm and the three mainstream approaches in research of events which preceded the concept. In the next part we will give a particular attention to preemptive measures taken against spread of this phenomenon, both on the domestic and foreign level. Final part of our work will be verification our assumed hypothesis that concept of Color revolutions is not only a way how to take down non democratic regime, but also is a technique which legitimize use of preemptive measures and therefore can close political regimes to authoritarian exercise of power.

Abstract:

V období medzi rokom 2000 až 2005 sa v postkomunistickom priestore uskutočnila séria udalostí, ktoré sú spoločne označované ako „Farebné revolúcie.“ Tieto udalosti dokázali použitím takmer identických taktík priviesť ku koncu vlády nedemokratických politických režimov v Srbsku (Buldozérová revolúcia), Gruzínsku (Ružová revolúcia), Kirgizstane (Tulipánová revolúcia) a na Ukrajine (Oranžová Revolúcia). Avšak následná viera a optimizmus, že sa našiel univerzálny kľuč k demokratizácii postkomunistického regiónu sa však čoskoro vytratili, pretože nedemokratické režimy dokázali identifikovať atribúty a techniky konceptu Farebných revolúcií, na základe čoho pripravili sériu preventívnych opatrení voči tejto hrozbe. V magisterskej diplomovej práci sa tak budeme venovať reakcii nedemokratických režimov na hrozbu Farebných revolúcií. A tak si postupne v práci predstavíme koncept Farebných revolúcií v rámci teórie demokratizácie resp. transitologickej paradigmy a tri hlavné prúdy výskumu tohto konceptu. V ďalšej časti sa budeme venovať prijatím preventívnym opatreniam voči šíreniu tohto fenoménu, a to ako aj na domácej, tak aj na medzinárodnej scéne. Finálnou častou práce bude verifikácia nami predpokladanej hypotézy, že koncept Farebných revolúcií predstavuje nielen spôsob na zvrhnutie nedemokratického režimu, ale aj techniku, ktorá legitimizuje použitie preventívnych opatrení, a tak približuje politické režimy k autoritatívnemu výkonu moci.
