Understanding the experiences of parents of children with intellectual disabilities

Abstract:

Cíl: Porozumění zkušenosti rodičů dětí s mentálním postižením Vzhledem k širokému spektru této problematiky je teoretická část práce zaměřena nejen na samotný pojem mentální retardace, ale popisuje také změny v oblasti rodiny a vztahů s okolím, péče a charakteru výchovy, které soužití s postiženým dítětem přináší. Metodika: V empirické části práce jsou metodou polostrukturovaného rozhovoru zpracovány výpovědi pěti rodičů pečujících o mentálně postižené dítě. Kladené otázky jsou zaměřeny na jednotlivá časová odobí: Období po stanovení diagnózy a copingové strategie, otázky zaměřeny na samostatnou péči o postižené dítě a skupinu otázek zaměřených na roli zdravotníků. Jejich výpovědi jsou v rámci narativy zpracovány formou otevřeného, axiálního a selektivního kódování. Využití této metody nám umožnilo lépe odkrýt subjektivní pocity rodičů, blíže charakterizovat jejich prožitky, zkušenosti a vztahové a rodinné problémy. Nedílnou součástí práce je také zaměření na roli zdravotnických profesionálů a na to, jak ji vnímají, charakterizují a hodnotí samotní rodiče. Výsledky: Z našeho výzkumu vyplynulo, že péče o mentálně postižené dítě představuje pro rodiče značnou zátěž, psychickou, fyzickou i sociální. Soužití s postiženým dítětem ovlivňuje život rodiny nejen mezi jejími členy, ale také v rámci okolí a společnosti. Jak dále vyplynulo, zdravotničtí profesionálové často chybují při poskytování ošetřovatelské péče v oblasti anamnézy, separačního chování k postiženému dítěti a jeho rodičům a upřednostňují vlastní názory před odbornými znalostmi. Závěr: Mentální postižení dítěte ovlivňuje postoj a chování zdravotníků nejen ke své osobě, ale také k jeho rodičům. Rodiče jsou zdravotníky konfrontováni již v porodnici za své rozhodnutí o postižené dítě pečovat. Dalším specifikou v oblasti poskytované péče je pochybení personálu v oblasti komunikačních a sociálních dovedností.

Abstract:

Aim: Understanding the experiences of parents of children with mental disabilities. Due to the wide range of issues, the theoretical part of the work focuses not only on the very concept of mental disability, but it also describes the changes in families and relationships with others, care, and the character of the style of upbringing that coexistence with a disabled child brings. Method: In the empirical part of the study, we use semi-structured interviews, prepared from the testimonies of five parents caring for mentally disabled children. The questions are aimed at individual time periods: The period after diagnosis and coping strategies, questions focused on individual care of a disabled child, and a group of questions focused on the role of health professionals. Their statements are within the narratives presented in the form of open, axial, and selective coding. Use of this method allowed us to better reveal the subjective feelings of the parents, to characterize their experiences, expertise, and relationships, as well as family problems. An integral part of the work is also focused on the role of health professionals and how they perceive, characterize, and evaluate the parents themselves Results: Our research has shown that taking care of a mentally disabled child represents a significant mental, physical, and social burden on the parents. Coexistence with a disabled child affects family life not only among its members, but also within the environment and in the society as a whole. As further shown, health professionals often make mistakes when providing nursing care as regards the medical history, separation behaviour of the affected child and his parents, and in favouring their own views rather than professional expertise. Closing: Mental disability affects a health care professional?s attitude and behaviour not only towards the child, but also to his parents. Parents are confronted by healthcare professionals in maternity wards of hospitals over their decision to care for a disabled child. Another distinguishing feature of the care provided is the misconduct of the personnel in their communication and social skills.
