Hygiene in ancient Rome

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se bude zabývat osobní hygienou starověkých Římanů a jejím vývojem v období republiky a císařství. V první části práce bude nastíněn postoj starých Římanů k osobní hygieně a analyzovány způsoby přejetí hygienických úkonů, praktik a budov spojených s hygienou od jiných národů antického světa (Etruskové, Řekové). Dále bude popsána historie vzniku lázní, domácích koupelen, veřejných toalet a dalších budov, které sloužily k vykonávání hygienických úkonů. Rovněž popíše vzhled a strukturu těchto zařízení. V druhé části práce bude analyzován vztah Římanů k osobní hygieně, jejich denní hygienická rutina i proces očisty těla v lázních, který tento národ doprovázely až do období úpadku a rozpadu říše s přihlédnutím k rozdílům daným pohlavím a sociálním statusem. Pozornost bude věnována i ženské kosmetice.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the personal hygiene of the ancient Romans and its development in the period of the republic and the empire. The first part of the thesis will outline the attitude of the ancient Romans to personal hygiene and analyse the ways of practising personal hygiene. buildings associated with these acts which were adopted from other nations of the ancient world (Etruscans, Greeks). Furthermore, the history of the origin of spas, home bathrooms and public toilets that were used to perform hygienic procedures will be described. It also features the description of the possible appearances of mentioned structures. The second part will analyse the relationship of the Romans to personal hygiene, their daily hygiene routine and the process of cleansing the body in the spa, which accompanied this nation until the decline and disintegration of the empire, taking into account differences in gender and social status. Attention will also be paid to women's cosmetics.
