Nuclear Weapons and Deterrence: A Critical Perspective

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se snaží kriticky prozkoumat způsob, jakým došlo k ustanovení racionality jaderných zbraní a jaderného odstrašování. Východiskem této práce je, že každá konkrétní forma racionality je produktem historického a sociálního kontextu. Způsob, jakým práce konceptualizuje a analyzuje racionalitu a její konkrétní formu, je odvozen od myšlení Michela Foucaulta. Konkrétně se zaměřujeme na situaci USA v období let 1945-1960, kdy dochází k definování způsobu zacházení s jadernými zbraněmi i vytvoření strategie jaderného odstrašování stejně jako strategických studií, která tvoří jeho teoretickou oporu. Práce ukazuje, a) jak a kolem kterých předpokladů se utvářela forma racionality a b) jak tato forma racionality působila na chápání strategické situace.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis critically investigates a constituted form of rationality of nuclear weapons and nuclear deterrence. A starting-point of the thesis is that every particular form of rationality is a product of historical and social context. In order to conceptualize and analyze rationality and its particular form, the thesis builds on some observations of Michel Foucault. Specifically, the thesis is focused on the USA in the period of 1945-1960 when the way of specific treatment with nuclear weapons and strategy of nuclear deterrence are being defined as well as academic field of strategic studies, as its main theoretical background, is established. The thesis shows a) how and around which predispositions the form of rationality has been constituted and b) how this form of rationality has effected on actor´s perception and understanding of strategic situation.
