Arab Spring in Democratization Studies: Twin Tolerations as a Prerequisite for Democratic Transition

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce, jak již napovídá její název, se bude v kontextu událostí Arabského jara zabývat demokratizačními procesy započatými ve čtyřech vybraných zemích blízkovýchodního regionu, přičemž bude využita teorie Twin Tolerations Alfreda Stepana. Zaměřuje se tedy na testování této teorie, která bývá často uváděna jako relevantní vysvětlení úspěšného dosažení demokratické tranzice v tuniském případě (Stepan 2012: 89), na více případech. Diplomová práce tak bude konfrontovat teorie Twin Tolerations s reáliemi vybraných případů. Na základě teorie Twin Tolerations, v jejíchž intencích se bude tento výzkum pohybovat, lze s ohledem na dostupná empirická data předpokládat, že podmínky pro dosažení jistého modu vzájemné tolerance, jak je stanovuje Stepan, budou ve vybraných zemích klíčovými aktéry reflektovány pouze částečně nebo vůbec. Hlavní přínos této práce tkví v poskytnutí souhrnného pohledu na vývoj ve vybraných arabských zemích optikou Stepanovy teorie. Činí tak především zaměřením se na vývoj vztahu náboženských aktérů a politických struktur, což poskytuje dostatečné množství dat pro zodpovězení otázky, zda konstrukce Twin Tolerations přispívá pozitivním způsobem k úspěšnému ukončení demokratické tranzice.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis, as its name suggests, will be in the context of the Arab Spring events dealing with democratisation processes in four selected middle-eastern countries, while using Alfred Stepan’s theory of Twin Tolerations. It focuses on confronting the theory, which is often cited a relevant explanation of the successful achievement of democratic transition in the Tunisian case with other relevant cases. Based on the the Twin Tolerations theory, which will provide necessary Framework for this research, it can be assumed with respect to available empiric data, that the conditions for reaching a certain mode of mutual tolerance among political actors, will be in selected countries reflected by the key players only partially or even not at all. The contribution of this work lies in providing a comprehensive view of the political development in selected Arab countries through the optics of Stepan’s Twin Tolerations theory. It will be done so mainly by focusing on the development of relations between religious actors and state instititutions, which should provide sufficient data in order to answer the question whether the construction of Twin Tolerations has a positive influence on successful completion of democratic transition.
