The Syntactic Analysis of Virginia Woolf´s novel "The Years"

Abstract:

The present thesis puts emphasis on the syntactic particularities of a less known novel of Virginia Woolf?s; its core part is divided into three subchapters, each of which analyses a specific phenomenon of the author?s sentence structure (syntax of chapter introduction sentences, principles of the symbol net, so-called bordering constructions). The issues in question are approached both formally and functionally and in order to achieve the full picture of their structure it is also the semantic view that is often taken into account. The main task of the work is to show the interrelations between syntactic and semantic and interpretational issues of the thesis, whose multi-dimensional construction results in questions of eternal struggle between form and content on one side, and time and art on the other.

Abstract:

Tato práce klade důraz na skladebné zvláštnosti méně známého románu Virginie Woolfové; její stěžejní část je rozdělena na tři podkapitoly, přičemž každá z nich rozebírá jeden specifický jev autorčiny větné skladby (syntax vět z úvodů kapitol, principy sítě symbolů, takzvané ohraničující konstrukce). K uvedeným tématům je přistupováno jak formálně tak funkčně a aby byla jejich stavba viděna v úplnosti, je vzato v potaz také hledisko sémantické. Hlavním úkolem práce je ukázat na propojenost syntaktických otázek s otázkami významu a interpretace díla, jehož vícerozměrná výstavba vyúsťuje v otázky věčného souboje mezi formou a obsahem na straně jedné a časem a uměním na straně druhé.
