The Memory in the Stone: Spoliae as a Historical Phenomenon in the Middle Ages

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce je zaměřena na historický fenomén spoliace, tedy opětovného používání uměleckých artefaktů. Časové vymezení se pohybuje od doby starověku po italskou renesanci XV. a XVI. století, geograficky je zkoumán středoevropský prostor s primárním zaměřením na území Itálie. Podstatnou částí práce je extenzivní pohled na dosavadní historiografii podoboru dějin umění, tzv. Spolia studies. Samostatnou kapitolu práce věnovala autorka textu terminologii a objasnění původu ter-mínů, se kterými studium spolií operuje. V textu je akcentována zejména doba vlády císaře Konstantina Velikého, protože je IV. století badateli typicky označováno za počátek praxe spoliace. Kromě toho text sleduje výraznou změnu diskurzu, ke které dochází v období tzv. italské renesance. Závěrem si autorka klade otázku, jestli může být XV.–XVI. století naopak viděno jako konečný bod praxe spoliace.

Abstract:

The presented work focuses on the historical phenomenon of spoliation, therefore the reuse of artistic artefacts. The time frame ranges from antiquity to the Italian Renaissance of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; geographically, the Central European area is explored, with a primary focus on the territory of Italy. An essential part of the thesis is an extensive look at the existing historiography of the subfield of art history called Spolia studies. A separate chapter of the thesis is devoted to terminology and clarification of the origin of the terms Spolia studies work with. The text emphasizes especially the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great, since the fourth century is typically referred to by scholars as the beginning of the practice of spoliation. In addition, the text traces a distinct change in discourse that occurs during the so-called Italian Renaissance. To conclude the author asks whether the fif-teenth-sixteenth centuries can be seen as the end point of the practice of spoliation.
