Anotace:

The thesis deals with culture-bound idioms and their origins. The thesis outlines the definition of idioms, and focuses on the connection between the origin of an idiom and culture. The main aim of the thesis is to investigate whether the knowledge of the origin of an idiom helps learners of English comprehend and remember the idiom better. The idioms selected for this thesis originated in twentieth-century Britain and their original usage is closely connected with British culture, society and politics.
