A Comparative Analysis of Dystopia in the Movie Matrix, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and George Orwell's 1984

Abstract:

Záměrem této práce je srovnání tří děl dystopické literatury – 1984 od George Orwella, Brave New World od Aldouse Huxleyho, a trilogie filmů Matrix od Lany a Andrewa Wachowských. Tato práce si dává za cíl prokázat, že tato díla společně poskytují abstrakci vzoru fungování společností znázorněných v dystopické literatuře. Tato díla jsou poté analyzovaná ze tří perspektiv: jedinec versus kolektiv, poté z perspektivy paměti ve vztahu k přítomnosti a iluze versus realita. Hlavním argumentem této práce je dokázat, že úspěšné fungování dystopické společnosti spočívá v její schopnosti vytvořit natolik dokonalou umělou kopii reality, na kterou dystopie reflektuje svoje paradigma, a že nedokonalosti takové projekce jsou přímo úměrné úrovni represe, které je jedinec vystaven při pokusu prolomit takovou iluzi. Práce ve své analýze především využívá poznatků A. H. Maslowa a jeho pyramidy lidských potřeb, dále pak Michel Foucaulta v otázce vztahu paradigmatu dystopie a "proti-paměti" a pak také Platónovi Alegorie jeskyně a její relevanci k problému iluze versus realita.

Abstract:

The goal of this work is to compare three landmark works of dystopian literature – Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) by George Orwell, Brave New World (1931) by Aldous Huxley, and The Matrix trilogy (1999 - 2003) by Lana and Andrew Wachowski, and to argue that these works, rather than differing from one another, work complementarily to provide an abstraction for the common pattern that manifests itself in the dystopian fiction. These works are then analyzed from three perspectives: the individual vs. the collective, the memory vs. the present, and the illusion vs. the reality. The main argument is that the successful functionality of dystopia depends on its ability to manufacture as close an artificial copy of “natural reality” as possible, upon which it projects its own paradigms, and that the deficiencies in such projections are directly proportionate to the amount of repression the individual receives attempting to distort such an illusion. The work draws mainly on the ideas of A. H. Maslow's "Theory of Human Motivation", Foucault's concept of "counter-memory" in relation to the respective paradigms, and Plato's "Allegory of a Cave" in relevance to the issue of the illussion vs. the reality.
