Salinity stress and salt tolerance in plants

Abstract:

SouhrnUvedená bakalářská práce se zabývala problematikou rostlinných mechanismů vedoucí ke kompenzaci stresu salinity. Literární rešerše shrnula literaturu v oblasti fyziologie především abiotického stresu rostlin se zaměřením na stres způsobený salinitou půdy.Výsledkem práce je stručný přehled v problematice a vysvětlení základních principů obrany rostlin vůči stresu a jejich reakcím.Výzkum stresu a odolnosti vůči němu je v současné době jedním z předních předmětů výzkumu. Je zřejmé, že klima celé planety prochází rychlejšími změnami, a proto bude nutné počítat s výskytem různých stresorů i tam, kde byl dříve jejich výskyt ojedinělý. S tím, jak se v České republice mění například rozložení srážek během roku, zvyšuje se výpar v létě a roste potřeba závlahy plodin, je proto možné, že i v naší zemi bude v dohledné budoucnosti salinita půdy velký problém. I přesto že většina našeho území nemá podloží a jiné aspekty, které by vznik salinity půdy výrazně podporovaly.Salinita půdy je největším problémem především v aridních a semiaridních oblastech jihovýchodní Evropy a západní Asie, dále se s problémy potýká Austrálie. Velkou měrou jsou také zasažena přímořská území a pobřeží. Podle zdrojů EU se jedná o třetí nejvýznamnější stresor v rámci Evropy. Za předpokladu neustále rostoucího počtu obyvatel planety a potřeby potravin je více než nutné se stresové problematice rostlin věnovat.Rostliny se stresorům buď vyhýbají (stress avoidance), nebo jejich působení kompenzují pomocí fyziologických a metabolických procesů (stress tolerance). Vyhnutí stresu zpravidla zahrnuje mechanické bariéry a jiné anatomické adaptace, které zabraňují stresorům pronikat a působit rostlinu (např. ztluštělá epidermis, trichomy na listech, zapuštěná stomata). Jednou z významných pasivních obranných reakcí rostlin vůči salinitě je také tzv. solná sukulentnost.Naopak strategie tolerování stresu většinou znamená adaptace na úrovni pletiv, buněk, enzymů a proteinů, které mají za úkol zmírňovat už samotné působení stresoru na rostlinu (např. akumulace anorganických iontů ve vakuolách, produkce organických osmolitů, vytváření různých ochranných proteinů). V rámci této reakce se jedná o tvorbu např. těchto obranných látek, jako jsou prolin, LEA proteiny (dehydriny), Heat-shock proteiny (chaperony).

SummaryThe bachelor thesis deals with the problems of plant mechanisms that lead to the compensation of the salinity stress. The literary research summarises the literature in the field of physiology, mainly abiotic stress of plants focused on the soil salinity stress.The result of the thesis is a brief overview of the issue and explanation of the basic principles of plant stress defence.The survey of the stress and the stress tolerance is one of the substantial aims of the present research. Obviously, the global climate undergoes quicker changes, thus it will be necessary to take into account the occurrence of various stressors even where the occurance was sporadic in the past. In the Czech Republic, for example, the rainfall distribution changes, the evaporation rises in summer and the need of the irrigation of the crops rises, which may cause salinity problems in the near future although most of our country does not have subsoil and other aspects that would support the salinity.The soil salinity is the biggest problem in the arid and semi-arid areas of the southeast Europe and west Asia, as well as Australia. Other affected areas are seaside and coastal areas. According to the EU data, it is the third most important stressor within Europe. Due to the permanent increasing number of our planet inhabitants and the need of food it is very important to deal with the problem of plant stress.Plants either avoid the stresses (stress avoidance) or compensate them with the help of physiological and metabolic processes (stress tolerance). Stress avoidance usually involves mechanical barriers and other anatomic adaptation which prevent from the influence of stressors on plants (for example swollen epidermis, trichoms on leaves, recessed stomata).One of the important passive defence reactions against salinity is the so-called salty succulent. On the contrary, the strategy of stress tolerance mostly means the adaptation on the tissue, cells, enzymes and proteins, which should mitigate the stressor influence on the plant (e.g. accumulation of inorganic ions in vacuoles, the production of organic osmolytes, production of various protective proteins). Within this reaction there is a production of the following defence substances, e.g. proline, LEA proteins (dehydrins), heat-shock proteins (chaperones).
