Discrepancy between learning expectations and subjective perception of the real course of study among psychology students

Abstract:

Cílem předložené práce je posoudit míru potenciální diskrepance mezi vysokoškolskými očekáváními a zkušeností studentů s průběhem studia, zmapovat tato vysokoškolská očekávání a vlastní zkušenost s průběhem studia studentů prvního roční-ku studijního bakalářského programu psychologie na Filozofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity po prvním semestru a posoudit vztah této diskrepance k vybraným proměnným (typ střední školy, vytrvalost, akademické sebepojetí a neuroticismus). V teoretické části byla vymezena problematika tranzitujících studentů ze SŠ na VŠ a faktorů ovlivňujících jejich úspěšný přechod na vysokou školu, mezi které patří koncept psychologické smlouvy, očekávání studentů, motivace, akademické sebepojetí a vybrané osobnostní charakteristiky. V empirické části se práce věnuje výzkumu, který se zaměřil na studenty prvního ročníku bakalářského studijního programu psychologie na Filozofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity. K získání dat byl využit Inventář očekávání, AMSS, BFI-10, Grit-S a ASC. Tyto dotazníky byly respondentům administrovány na začátku podzimního a začátku jarního semestru. Výzkum ukázal, že nastupující studenti vykazují převážně pozitivní vysokoškolská očekávání. Nejmenší míru diskrepance vysokoškolských očekávání a zkušeností studentů s průběhem studia jsme zaznamenali u položky vyváženosti seminářů a přednášek. Naopak největší míru diskrepance vysokoškolských očekávání a zkušeností studentů s průběhem studia vykazuje položka mapující získání sociálního stipendia. Byl potvrzen vztah zkušeností s průběhem studia studentů s vyšším akademickým sebepojetím. Ostatní zkoumané vztahy diskrepance mezi vysokoškolskými očekáváními a zkušeností studentů s průběhem studia s dalšími vybranými proměnnými nebyly statisticky významné.

Abstract:

The aim of the present study is to assess the degree of potential discrepancy between university expectations and students' experience with the course of study, to map these university expectations and students' own experience with the course of study of first-year students of the Bachelor of Psychology program at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University after the first semester, and to assess the relationship of this discrepancy to selected variables (type of high school, persistence, academic self-concept, and neuroticism). In the theoretical part, the issue of transitioning students from high school to university and the factors influencing their successful transition to university were defined, including the concept of psychological contract, students' expectations, motivation, academic self-concept and selected personality characteristics. In the empirical part, the thesis focuses on research that focused on first-year students of the Bachelor's degree programme in psychology at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University. The Expectancy Inventory, AMSS, BFI-10, Grit-S and ASC were used to collect data. These questionnaires were administered to respondents at the beginning of the fall and beginning of the spring semesters. The research showed that incoming students exhibit predominantly positive college expectations. The least degree of discrepancy between students' college expectations and their experiences with the course of study was observed for the item on the balance of seminars and lectures. Conversely, the item mapping the receipt of a social scholarship shows the greatest degree of discrepancy between students' university expectations and their experiences with their course of study. The relationship of experience with the course of study of students with higher academic self-concept was confirmed. The other examined relationships of the discrepancy between university expectations and students' experiences with the course of study with other selected variables were not statistically significant.
