Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem žánrové prostupnosti v muzikálu Fantom Opery Andrew Lloyd Webbera, konkrétně zjišťuje vztahy mezi operou a muzikálem uvnitř tohoto díla. Práce se také pokouší klasifikovat a vymezit pojem žánr, jehož problematické ukotvení a nejednotné užívání v uměnovědných oborech přináší řadu komplikací. Autor předkládá a sumarizuje definice pojmů opera a muzikál a následně zaměřuje pozornost na odbornou literaturu, která jako jedno z dílčích témat řeší vztah mezi muzikálem a operou. Pro přiblížení fenoménu žánrové synkreze opery a muzikálu také nastiňuje problematiku zpěvu jakožto nositele žánrových specifik ve zkoumaném díle. V rámci charakteristiky díla Fantom Opery přibližuje jeho proměnu skrze médium, od románové předlohy Gastona Lerouxe po filmové zpracování Webberova muzikálu. Metodou podrobné hudebně-dramatické analýzy zkoumá hudební motivy a témata, identifikuje jejich vzájemné vztahy a funkčnost při dramatické výstavbě díla. Získané poznatky aplikuje na hudebně-dramatickou charakteristiku hlavních postav a používá je ke zhodnocení Webberových kompozičních principů se zacílením na vstup opery do muzikálu. Příspěvkem autora je pokus o identifikaci a následnou specifikaci žánrových synkrezí opery a muzikálu ve Webberově Fantomovi Opery, včetně zjištění eventuálních rovin těchto prostupů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the phenomenon of genre syncretism in the musical The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber; specifically, it explores relations between opera and musical theatre within this piece of work. It also tries to classify and specify the term genre, the problematic definition and ambiguity of use in art sciences of which causes a lot of complications. The author presents and summarises definitions of the terms opera and musical and then turns his attention to literature dealing with relations between musical and opera as one of its subjects. To give insight into the phenomenon of genre syncretism of opera and musical, the thesis targets the issue of singing, which is seen as a vehicle for genre specifics in the researched piece of work. Within the characteristics of The Phantom of the Opera, the thesis outlines the transformation of the work between different media, from Gaston Leroux's novel to the film adaptation of Webber's musical. Using the method of detailed musico-dramatic analysis, the thesis explores musical motifs and themes and identifies their mutual relations and functionality in the dramatic construction of the work. The findings are then applied to the musico-dramatic characterization of main characters and evaluation of Webber's compositional principles with the focus on entry of opera into musical. The author's contribution is the attempt of identification and subsequent specification of genre syncretism of opera and musical in Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, including the finding of possible levels of such syncretism.
