Dishonest behavior of undergraduates in the academic environment

Abstract:

Stejně tak jako podniky a organizace, by měly i vysoké školy v rámci svého managementu správně nastavit jednotlivé procesy, prostřednictvím kterých dosahují svých cílů. Tyto procesy je potřeba nejen nastavit, ale následně také vyhodnocovat a eventuální odchylky eliminovat. Univerzity často musí nastavit i takové procesy, kterými reagují na nové situace. V posledních letech je možné zaznamenat vzrůstající trend v oblasti nečestného chování studentů v akademickém prostředí. Aby bylo možné takovému chování předcházet a omezit jej, je nutné znát důvody, příčiny a pohnutky studentů, které je k takovému chování vedou. Dobře nastavená opatření vedením vysokých škol by měla být efektivní v eliminaci nečestného chování. Cílem diplomové práce bylo vyhodnotit, která ze složek Ajzenovy teorie plánovaného chování (postoje, subjektivní norma a vnímaná kontrola chování) má nejsilnější vliv na záměr studentů FSE UJEP k dopouštění se nepoctivého chování v akademickém prostředí. Dále byl zkoumán vliv morálního závazku a také vliv rizika odhalení a tvrdosti sankce na záměr studentů podvádět. Vedlejším cílem práce byla identifikace rozdílů v podvádění při prezenční výuce a výuce online v době pandemie nemoci covid-19. K dosažení cíle práce byla použita primární data, která byla získána pomocí metody dotazníkového šetření (N=409). Jako nejsilnějším faktorem z teorie plánovaného chování byla pomocí regresní analýzy stanovena vnímaná kontrola chování. Druhým nejsilnějším faktorem byl morální závazek a dále subjektivní normy. Postoje nebyly stanoveny jako statisticky významný faktor. Bylo také zjištěno, že vnější faktory riziko odhalení a tvrdost sankce mají vliv na záměr studentů podvádět. Na základě výsledků jsou navržena konkrétní doporučení, která mohou být užitečná pro management fakulty pro předcházení a omezení případů porušení akademické integrity.

Abstract:

As well as companies and organizations, universities should also set up the individual processes within which they achieve their goals within their management. These processes need not only to be set, but also to be evaluated and any deviations to be eliminated. Universities often have to also set up processes to respond to new situations. In recent years, it is possible to observe a growing trend in the area of dishonest behavior of students in the academic environment. In order to prevent and reduce such behavior, it is necessary to know the reasons, causes and motivations of students that lead them to such behavior. Well-designed measures by university management should then be effective in eliminating dishonest behaviour. The aim of the diploma thesis was to evaluate which component of Ajzen's theory of planned behavior (attitudes, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control) has the strongest influence on the intention of FSE UJEP students to commit dishonest behaviour in the academic environment. Furthermore, the effect of moral obligation was examined, as well as the effect of the risk of detection and the hardness of the sanction on the students' intention to cheat. The secondary goal of the work was to identify differences in cheating in full-time and online teaching during the covid-19 pandemic. To achieve the aim of the work, primary data were used, which were obtained using the method of questionnaire survey (N = 409). Perceived behavioral control was determined as the strongest factor from the theory of planned behaviour using regression analysis. The second strongest factor was moral obligation followed by subjective norms. Attitudes were not established as a statistically significant factor. It was also found that external factors, the risk of detection and the hardness of the sanction affect the intention of students to cheat. Based on the results, specific recommendations are proposed that may be useful for university management to prevent and reduce cases of breaches of academic integrity.
