Emo subculture from the point of view of adolescents in online context

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá současnou subkulturou mládeže – Emo, v kontextu prostředí internetu. Pomocí kvalitativní metody hierarchických struktur bylo analyzováno 17 rozhovorů s dospívajícími, kteří se identifikují s Emo a tuto svou identitu manifestují i online. Zkoumán byl zejména význam členství v subkultuře, způsob, jakým celkově vyznavači Emo na tento styl nahlížejí a role, kterou v rámci subkultury hraje internet. Tato subkultura je v současnosti médii prezentována jako riziková, zejména z hlediska údajné souvislosti s depresivitou, sebepoškozováním a sebevražedným jednáním. Bylo zjištěno, že v rámci výzkumného souboru subkultura Emo funguje jako vrstevnická skupina (peer group) a to jak online, tak offline a poskytuje tak nesporné výhody (sociální oporu, pocit náležení někam). Poskytuje prostor k exploraci identity a možnost vyjádření autentických emocí. Zároveň se v jejím rámci mění tradiční pojetí maskulinity a panuje velká tolerance k menšinově sexuálně orientovaným. Internet je pak nedílným aspektem života Emo dospívajících a tím, kolem čeho se celá subkultura konstituuje. Je nástrojem pro setkávání individuální i skupinové a posiluje pocit skupinové sounáležitosti. V rámci souboru se vyskytlo téma sebepoškozování a sebevražednosti, ale spíše ve smyslu popření domnělé souvislosti s Emo a zdůraznění závažných problémů coby příčiny takového jednání; sebepoškozování je také přisouzeno těm, kdo by chtěli do subkultury patřit, ale nerozumí její pravé podstatě (pozéři), pak je odsuzováno jako něco, co vrhá na subkulturu špatné světlo. Ti, kdo se řadí ke stylu Emo, se často setkali s nějakou formou odmítnutí, obtěžování nebo dokonce šikany jen pro svou příslušnost k této skupině, což je zřejmě způsobeno jejich vybočováním z některých obecně přijímaných společenských norem.

Abstract:

The study focuses on Emo – a temporary youth subculture and its online aspects. 17 semi-structured interviews with Emo adolescents manifesting their Emo identity online were conducted online and analyzed according to the method of Hierarchical Structures. The subjective meaning of being a part of Emo, way of understanding what Emo really is and the role of internet within the subculture were examined. Emo subculture is being looked at and presented as risky these days by media, mainly in terms of depression, self-harming and suicide. Results showed that within our sample, Emo subculture works as a peer group, both online and offline and as such provides young people with benefits (social support, sense of belonging). Also, Emo subculture represents a space to explore one´s identity and a possibility to express authentic emotions. Traditional concept of masculinitity shifts within the subculture and its members showed to have very tolerant attitudes towards sexual minorities. Internet works as an agent of spreading and constituting the subculture. It allows getting in touch and meeting offline, both individually and as a group and strengthens the feeling of group belonging. Among our respondents, topics of self-harming and suicide emerged; but mostly respondents expressed their denial of link between Emo and self-harming and stressed that serious personal problems are the cause of such behavior (not Emo itself). Self-harming was also attributed to “posers”, those who do not understand the subculture but want to be a part of it in such way. Then this behavior is judged as something that causes the bad reputation of subculture. Emo followers often have to face some kind of denial, attacks or even bullying just because of their belonging to the subculture, which is probably caused by the fact that they a bit differ from other teenagers in terms of some generally accepted social norms.
