Vivien M. Palmer and her methodological manual for field work of doctoral students of the Chicago School of Sociology

Abstract:

Cílem mé bakalářské práce je reflexe knihy Field Studies in Sociology - A Student's manual od Vivien Marie Palmerové, ve které pro studenty sociologie shrnuje rady a metody terénního výzkumu. Učebnici rozebírám z obsahového hlediska, ale i z hlediska historického kontextu, kde se zmiňuji o Chicagské sociologické škole a jejím zaměření či výzkumech, také o některých jejích slavných představitelích - R. E. Parkovi a E. W. Burgessovi. Obsahové hledisko pak obsahuje rozbor učebnice. Rozhodla jsem se pro použití sekundární analýzy dokumentů, například knih, archivních materiálů, nebo další dokumentace. Zaměření této práce je převážně teoretické. Praktické zaměření pak obsahuje zhodnocení přínosu učebnice pro práci doktorandů Chicagské školy a dalších autorů monografií Chicagské sociologické školy z let 1925 až 1933. Konkrétněji se budu zabývat H. W. Zorbaughem a jeho knihou The Gold Coast and the Slum: a sociological study of Chicago's near north side nebo s Louisem Wirthem a jeho prací The Ghetto. Taktéž zde shrnuji některé ohlasy autorů, kteří o Vivien M. Palmerové napsali.

Abstract:

The object of my bachelor's thesis is reflecting the book Field Studies in Sociology - A Student's Manual by Vivien Marie Palmer. In the publication she summarized advices and methods of field research for students of sociology. Here in my thesis, I analyse the content aspect and also the historically point of view where I mention the Chicago School of Sociology and its focus or its research. As well I write about some of its famous representatives - Robert E. Park and Ernest W. Burgess. The content aspect contains an analysis of the textbook. I decided to use secondary analysis of documents, for example books, archival materials, or other documentation. The focus of this thesis is mainly theoretical. The practical focus contains evaluation of the benefits of the schoolbook for the work of doctoral students of the Chicago School and of other authors of monographs of the Chicago School of Sociology of Sociology from 1925 to 1933. More specifically, I will deal with Harvey W. Zorbaugh and with his book The Gold Coast and the Slum: a sociological study of Chicago's near north side or with Louis Wirth and his thesis The Ghetto. In this thesis I also summarize some of the responses of the authors who wrote about Vivien M. Palmer.
