Neutral Finland and its activity in the UN and cooperation with NATO

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá zahraniční politiku Finska jako malého a neutrálního státu, konkrétně jeho činnost v rámci dvou mezinárodních organizací - Organizace spojených národů a Severoatlantické aliance. OSN pro Finsko představuje již tradiční působiště, které mu již od získání členství v roce 1955 umožňuje prosazovat jeho zájmy a podílet se na mezinárodním dění. Naopak NATO představuje organizaci, se kterou Finsko pouze spolupracuje, a to od 90. let 20. století. S působením Finska jako partnera této vojenské aliance souvisí i otázka jeho neutrality. V teoretické části se práce zabývá problematikou malých států v mezinárodních vztazích, specifickým charakteristikám jejich zahraniční politiky a zahraničně-politickým strategiím. Druhá část zkoumá roli a význam neutrality v zahraniční politice Finska jako malého státu. Třetí část se věnuje jeho působení jako malého a neutrálního státu v OSN a ve spolupráci s NATO.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the foreign policy of Finland as the one of small and neutral state, specifically its activity in the two international organizations – the United Nations and NATO. The UN represent a traditional arena for Finland, which helped the country to promote its interests and to participate in the international relations since aquiring the membership in 1955. NATO, on the other hand, represents the organization Finland only cooperates with as a partner. Finland's involvement as a partner of this military alliance is linked to the issue of its neutrality. Theoretical part of the thesis deals with the issue of small states in international relations, specific characteristics of their foreign policy and with their foreign policy strategies. The second part examines the role, significance and meaning of neutrality in the foreign policy of Finland as a small state. The third part deals with its activity as a small and neutral state in the United Nations and within the cooperation with NATO.
