The Effectiveness of Economic Policies in Promoting Sustainable Development: a Case Study of Kerala Economy in India

Abstract:

This thesis investigates the integration of sustainable development principles within Kerala’s economic policy environment, with a particular focus on institutional mechanisms, governance systems, and policy coherence. The study retains its central aim of analysing how sustainability- oriented development strategies can strengthen Kerala’s long-term socio-economic and environmental outcomes. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews with government officials and subject experts, quantitative questionnaire-based surveys administered to the public of Kerala, and secondary data analysis drawn from official documents and scholarly literature. These methods enabled a comprehensive assessment of Kerala’s developmental trajectory, environmental vulnerabilities, institutional capacities, and governance challenges. The findings provide insight into how Kerala can strengthen sustainability-aligned planning and propose pathways for enhancing inclusive, resilient and ecologically balanced development.
