The Impact of FDI on Structurally Affected Regions on the Example of Ostrava

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá strukturálně postiženým regionem Ostrava, který prošel od 90. let 20. století hospodářskou transformací. Hlavním cílem práce je zjistit specifika regionu a následně zhodnotit vliv přímých zahraničních investic (PZI) na socioekonomickou situaci Ostravy po roce 2000. Teoretická část práce ukazuje trend v přílivu PZI jak v ČR, tak v Ostravě a popisuje možné dopady přílivu investic ze zahraničí na strukturálně postižené regiony. Druhá kapitola je věnována vývoji těžkého průmyslu, průmyslovému úpadku a zhodnocení nově vzniklých strukturálních problémů na trhu práce. Třetí kapitola sděluje, jak se region přeměnil od počáteční fáze transformace do aktuální podoby a analyzuje jednotlivé oblasti Ostravy ve vztahu k přílivu PZI. Jde o trh práce, vývoj a výzkum, dopravní infrastrukturu a průmyslové a rozvojové zóny.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the structurally affected region of Ostrava, which has undergone an economic transformation since the 1990s. The main aim of the thesis is to identify the specifics of the region and then to evaluate the impact of foreign direct investments (FDI) on Ostrava´s socio-economic situation after the year 2000. The theoretical part of the thesis shows the trend in FDI inflows both in the Czech Republic and in Ostrava and describes the possible impact of foreign direct investment inflows on structurally affected regions. The second chapter is devoted to the development of heavy industry, industrial decline and an assessment of newly emerging structural problems in the labour market of Ostrava. The last chapter focuses on how the region has transformed from the initial phase of transformation to its current situation and analyses the different areas of Ostrava in relation to FDI inflows such as the labour market, R&D, transport infrastructure, and industrial and development zones.
