The Importance of Gold in Monetary History

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce má za cíl odpovědět na otázku, zda je zlato stále významné v moderní monetární oblasti za pomoci analýzy zlatých zásob u vybraných centrálních bank a rozboru vývoje cen zlata. Práce se skládá ze tří kapitol. Teoretická část se zabývá historií zlata v měnové oblasti, dále nastiňuje unikátní vlastnosti tohoto drahého kovu, měření jeho hmotnosti a ryzosti. Práce taktéž charakterizuje zlatý standard a jeho různé formy. Dále se představuje vývoj zlatého standardu během 20. století od dob první světové války po zánik zlatého standardu. V praktické části je zpracován vývoj zlatých zásob vybraných centrálních bank od dob Brettonwoodského měnového systému po současnost. Následně je zkoumán vývoj ceny zlata s důrazem na chování cen tohoto drahého kovu v období, kdy probíhaly recese. Práce vyúsťuje v závěr, že hodnota zlata má tendenci růst v dobách ekonomických nejistot a kromě toho zlato ještě pořád je důležitým prvkem pro centrální banky, a tudíž je stále významným pro monetární oblast.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to answer the question of whether gold is still important in the modern monetary area using the analysis of gold reserves at selected central banks and an analysis of the development of gold prices. This work consists of three chapters. The theoretical part deals with the history of gold in the monetary area, furthermore it outlines the unique properties of this precious metal, as well as ways of measuring its weight and purity. This work additionally characterizes the gold standard and its various forms. Moreover this section includes the development of the gold standard during the 20th century from the First World War till the end of the gold standard. The practical part analyzes the development of gold reserves of selected central banks from the time of the Bretton Woods monetary system to the present. Subsequently, the development of the price of gold is examined with emphasis on the behavior of the prices of this precious metal in the period of recessions. This thesis results in the conclusion that the value of gold tends to grow in times of economic uncertainty and, in addition, gold is still an important element for central banks and therefore still important for the monetary area.
