The analysis of the construction of the Bridge of Slovak National Uprising in Bratislava as an example of big project of socialist city

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis analyses the construction of the Bridge of Slovak National Uprising as an example of a big project of a socialist city. The thesis describes basic, in literature repeated characteristics of an implementation of a big project: the decision-making power is in the hands of Communist party and state, specific local power structure, which includes city representatives, central government, the Party, but also big local undertakings, the city’s attitude towards its historical centre is problematic, the project implementation is lead by specific goals and motives and finally, various kinds of forms of public reaction appeared. The construction of the Bridge meets the majority of these characteristics. Its main specific characteristic is that the goal of the Bridge’s construction was not a socialist transformation of the city, but the Bridge was to serve as a tool for solving practical needs of the city, such as the concept of great Bratislava and its constitution as Slovak metropolis. Therefore, national motives played a significant role. Apart from that, the construction was to a great extend influenced by purely practical reasons, such as lack of finances. Therefore, the general conclusion is that the construction of the Bridge is surely an example of a big project of socialist city. However, the goals of Bridge’s implementation were specific, specifically the importance of national question.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca analyzuje výstavbu Mostu SNP v Bratislave ako príklad veľkého projektu socialistického mesta. Predstavuje základné charakteristiky zavádzania veľkého projektu, opakujúce sa v odbornej literatúre, a to: rozhodovacia moc v rukách komunistickej strany a štátu, špecifická lokálna mocenská štruktúra, zahŕňajúca predstaviteľov mesta, centrálnu vládu, stranu, ale aj veľké miestne podniky, problematický vzťah mesta k historickému centru, špecifické ciele a motívy, presadzované pri zavádzaní projektu a verejnosť reagovala rozličnými formami nesúhlasu. Výstavba Mostu SNP v Bratislave napĺňa väčšinu z týchto charakteristík. Jej hlavným špecifikom je, že cieľom výstavby Mostu nebola socialistická transformácia mesta, ale Most mal slúžiť ako prostriedok pre vyriešenie praktických potrieb mesta. Tými boli predstavy o veľkej Bratislave a jej koštituovanie ako metropoly Slovenska. Výraznú rolu preto hrali národné motívy. Stavbu ďalej veľmi ovplyvnili aj čisto praktické aspekty, ako nedostatok financií. Celkovým záverom preto je, že výstavba Mostu SNP môže nepochybne slúžiť ako príklad veľkého projektu socialistického mesta. Pri jeho presadzovaní sa ale uplatňovali špecifické ciele, najmä národná otázka.
