Prevention of the varicose veins of general nurses

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem bakalářské práce bylo zjistit možnosti prevence varixů dolních končetin u všeobecných sester ve třech ostravských nemocnicích: Fakultní nemocnici Ostrava, Městské nemocnice Ostrava a Vítkovické nemocnice. Dílčím cílem bylo zjistit výskyt onemocnění varixů u všeobecných sester, posoudit náročnost jednotlivých pracovišť, životní styl všeobecných sester, zjistit možnosti edukace o preventivních opatřeních a zjistit zájem všeobecných sester o problematiku prevence varixů dolních končetin. Metodika: K získání dat byla použita kvantitativní výzkumná metoda dotazníku vlastní konstrukce. Celkem odpovídalo 180 respondentů - všeobecných sester pracujících na lůžkovém oddělení, ambulancích nebo operačním sále ve zmíněných nemocnicích. Šetření probíhalo od října do prosince 2009. Výsledky: Dotazníkovým průzkumem bylo zjištěno, že mezi sestrami je velký výskyt varixů dolních končetin. Náročnost povolání, věk i životní styl všeobecné sestry můžou ovlivnit vznik varixů dolních končetin. Zájem o problematiku prevence varixů dolních končetin projevilo 76 respondentů. Zvýšený zájem o preventivní opatření a možnosti využití ochranných pomůcek u všeobecných sester, by mohl přispět ke snížení výskytu varixů dolních končetin. Závěr: Prevence je důležitou součástí péče o zdraví. Investovat do prevence se vyplatí více, než léčit vzniklé onemocnění. Vytvořením krátkého edukačního materiálu pro sestry můžeme přispět k používání preventivních opatření, a tím i zabránit vzniku onemocnění nebo alespoň normalizovat již vzniklé onemocnění. Varixy dolních končetin se dnes zařazují mezi civilizační onemocnění, a proto je nutné věnovat pozornost jejich prevenci.

Abstract:

Goal: The main goal of this thesis is to explore the possibility of preventing varicose veins in the lower extremities of the general nurses in three Ostrava hospitals: Ostrava Teaching Hospital, Ostrava City Hospital and Vitkovice Hospital. The partial objective is to determine the occurrence of varicose veins in the lower extremities of general nurses and to assess the intensity of individual departments and the lifestyle of general nurses. Furthermore, this thesis aims to explore the educational possibilities with regards to preventive measures and to ascertain the interest of general nurses on the issue of preventing varicose veins in the lower extremities. Methodology: To obtain the data the author used a quantitative research method ? questionnaire. A total of 180 respondents took part in this survey ? general nurses working in the in-patient departments, outpatient clinics or surgical departments of the aforementioned hospitals. The survey took place from October until December 2009. Results: The survey found that there is a high occurrence of varicose veins in the lower extremities among nurses. The intensity of occupation, age and lifestyle of the general nurse can affect the emergence of varicose veins in the lower extremities. 76 respondents were interested in prevention remedies for varicose veins of lower extremities. An increased interest in preventive measures and the opportunity to utilize protective equipment for general nurses could contribute to the reduction of lower extremity varicose vein occurrence. Conclusion: Prevention is an important part of healthcare. Investing in prevention is a more worthwhile endeavor than spending money to treat the disease once it has occurred. Creating concise educational materials for nurses can contribute to the utilization of preventive measures and thus prevent the beginning of such a disease or at least normalize the disease which has already occurred. Varicose veins in the lower extremities are now classified as one of the ´diseases of civilization´ and therefore it is necessary to focus on its prevention.
