Development of Variation Form in Piano Literature

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zaměřuje na hudební formu s nejdelší tradicí – na variace. Právě v době, kdy málokteré věci a jevy mají delšího trvání, je důležité věnovat pozornost těm, které naopak prošly prověrkou času a provázejí nás po staletí. Jeden z cílů práce tedy vyplývá z oné dlouhé životnosti této formy – sledovat vývoj formy variací v proměnách času a stylů. Vzhledem k oblíbenosti formy jsme zúžili obzor zájmu na klavírní tvorbu. Práci tvoří dvě významné části. V úvodní teoretické části zasazujeme variace do kontextu hudebních forem obecně, definujeme formu variací a uvádíme klasifikaci a různé poznatky o této formě tak, jak je prezentuje hudebně-teoretická literatura zaměřená na hudební formy. Praktická část práce pak naplňuje druhý cíl práce, jímž je konfrontovat teoretické reflexe uvedené v odborné literatuře s výsledky analýz vybraných skladeb příslušných období, čímž dojde k potvrzení nebo vyvrácení hypotézy formulované v úvodu práce, podle níž lze předpokládat určitou míru nesouladu mezi teorií a praxí.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis focuses on music form with the longest tradition – variation. In the period, where there are few things and phenomena which last long, it is important to pay attention to these which have undergone proof of time and have accompanied us for centuries. One of the aims of the thesis results from the long life of this form - it is to follow the development of the variation form in the changes of time and styles. According to the popularity of the form, we have narrowed down the field of our interest to piano literature. The thesis consists of two significant parts. In the introductory theoretical part, we put variation form in the context of music forms in general, we define the variation form and we present the classification and various information about this form, as it is presented in music-theoretical literature on music forms. The practical part fulfils the second aim of the thesis which is to confront theoretical reflections presented in professional literature with the results of analysis of chosen compositions of particular styles which will enable us to prove or disprove the hypothesis suggested in the introduction of the thesis. According to the hypothesis, a certain amount of discord between theory and practice could be expected.
