Analysing evaluative language in YouTube tech videos

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of evaluative language and expressions used in YouTube tech videos that feature the latest technological products. The aim of this thesis is to identify specific verbal and non-verbal resources which a YouTuber uses in these review videos for their assessment of products. For the purposes of this analysis, three videos by MKBHD (Marques Keith Brownlee) were selected and transcribed. The theoretical part focuses mainly on YouTube and its participatory culture, expressing emotion, evaluative language, and attitudes. The analysis draws on the appraisal framework (Appraisal theory by Martin and White, 2005) and focuses on the expressions of attitude which contain a positive or a negative appraisal of the product and are expressed through different lexico-grammatical features. The results of the analysis indicate that the interpretation of appraisal, whether positive or negative, is context-dependent, and that attitude is expressed through different lexico-grammatical features, mainly verbs and adjectives. The analysis also indicates that, in the data, attitude is mainly expressed through affect and appreciation.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na analýzu hodnotících výrazů v YouTube videích, ve kterých jsou představovány nejnovější technologické produkty. Cílem této práce je identifikovat konkrétní verbální a neverbální prostředky, které youtuber používá ve svých recenzních videích k hodnocení produktů. Pro tuto analýzu byly vybrány a následně přepsány tři videa amerického youtubera MKBHD (Marques Keith Brownlee). V teoretické části se práce věnuje především YouTube a jeho kultuře, vyjadřování emocí, a také hodnotícímu jazyku a postojům. Práce se v analýze opírá o hodnotící rámec (Appraisal theory) od Martin a White (2005). Hlavní pozornost je věnována vyjádření postoje pomocí různých lexikálně-gramatických prvků a také vyjádření hodnocení pozitivně nebo negativně vůči produktu. Výsledky analýzy naznačují, že interpretace hodnotících prvků, jak už pozitivních nebo negativních, je závislá na kontextu, a také že hodnocení je vyjádřeno pomocí různých lexikálně gramatických prvků, a to především slovesy a přídavnými jmény. Analýza také naznačuje, že převládající kategorie hodnocení v datech jsou zejména tzv. affect a appreciation.
