Virtual organizations as organizational innovation

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou virtuálních organizací, jakožto typem organizačních inovací. Výzkum je věnován zejména bariérám, které brání transformaci tradičních organizací na virtuální a také hnacím silám, které implementaci tohoto nového organizačního uspořádání podněcují. Teoretická část je rozdělena do tří základních okruhů. První velkou kapitolou je okruh týkající se teorie a významu inovací, následuje rozsáhlá kapitola věnující se virtuálním organizacím a posledním velkým okruhem je kapitola zabývající se transformací firmy jako manažerským konceptem. Na teoretickou část navazuje část praktická v podobě kvalitativního výzkumu, který přispívá k naplnění hlavního a dílčího cíle práce. Ke sběru dat v rámci kvalitativního výzkumu je využito hloubkových rozhovorů, jenž jsou vedeny se vzorkem deseti respondentů spadajících do stanoveného výzkumného souboru. Cíl práce je rozdělen na hlavní a dílčí. Hlavním cílem diplomové práce je identifikace faktorů, které brání transformaci na virtuální organizaci. Dílčím cílem je určení nejvýznamnějších hnacích sil, které implementaci tohoto organizačního modelu podněcují. Pro splnění cíle práce a lepší pochopení toho, jakým směrem se daná diplomová práce ubírá, jsou stanoveny tři výzkumné otázky: Jaké jsou klíčové faktory motivace pro transformaci na virtuální organizaci? Jaké jsou bariéry transformace na virtuální organizaci? Jaké jsou kritické faktory úspěchu fungování virtuální organizace? Data získaná z rozhovorů jsou kódována a analyzována pomocí softwaru MAXQDA. Z provedené studie vyplynulo, že nejvýznamnějšími hnacími silami, které podněcují implementaci virtuálního organizačního modelu, jsou snížení nákladů firmy, lepší work-life balance zaměstnanců a inovativnost, tedy vize stát se moderní pokrokovou organizací. Bariérami, které v transformaci na virtuální organizaci firmám naopak nejčastěji brání, jsou dle výsledků plynoucích z rozhovorů kompletní a časově náročné zavedení nových interních systémů vedoucím k zajištění efektivního způsobu komunikace a skutečnost, že lidé nemají rádi změny, neradi vystupují z komfortní zóny a o fungování virtuálních organizací mají mylné představy, které není snadné prolomit.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the virtual organizations as a type of organizational innovation. In particular, the research focuses on the barriers that hinder the transformation of a traditional organization into a virtual one, as well as the drivers that the implementation of this new organizational model brings. The theoretical part is divided into three main areas. The first major heading describes the theory and meaning of innovation, following large chapter deals with the topic of virtual organizations, and the last major heading is about firm transformation as a managerial concept. The theoretical part is followed by a practical part in the form of qualitative research that contributes to the main and sub-objectives of the thesis. In-depth interviews are used to collect data in the qualitative research, which are conducted with a sample of ten respondents falling within the defined research group. The objective of the thesis is divided into main and sub-objectives. The main objective of the thesis is to identify the factors that hinder the transformation to a virtual organization. The sub-objective is to identify the most significant driving forces that encourage the implementation of this organizational model. In order to meet the objective of the thesis and to better understand the direction in which the thesis is heading, three research questions are identified: What are the key drivers of motivation for transformation to a virtual organization? What are the barriers to transformation to a virtual organization? What are the critical success factors of operating a virtual organization? Data collected from the interviews are coded and analyzed using MAXQDA software. The study conducted revealed that the most important drivers that encourage the implementatin of a virtual organization model are cost reduction of the company, better work-life balance of employees and innovation – the vision of becoming a modern progressive organization. On the contrary, the barriers that most often prevent companies from transforming into a virtual organization are, according to results of the interviews, the complete and time-consuming implementation of new internal systems leading to an effective way of communication and the fact that people do not like changes, they do not like to leave their comfort zone and have misconceptions about the functioning of virtual organizations that are not easy to break.
