Examining the Role of African American Women in Contemporary Hollywood Films

Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje tématu zobrazování afroamerických žen ve dvou současných životopisných filmech, konkrétně ve filmech Skrytá čísla a Harriet. Cílem je analyzovat toto zobrazení v historickém kontextu a na základě příběhů a vzpomínek žen, o nichž tyto filmy pojednávají. Práce také poskytuje základní informace o teorii historických a životopisných filmů, o zobrazení Afroameričanů ve filmech se zaměřením na chybnou interpretaci a stereotypy a o stručné historii Afroameričanů, která je ve filmech zmíněna.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the way African American women are depicted in two contemporary biographical movies, namely Hidden Figures and Harriet. The aim is to analyse the portrayal with the help of the historical context and stories and accounts of the women these movies are about. The thesis also provides a background to the theory of historical and biographical movies, the representation of African Americans in movies, focusing on the misinterpretation and stereotypes, and the brief history of African Americans that is mentioned in the movies.
