Ceoss-Lingustic Comparison of English and Czech Animal Idioms

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis is a comparison of English and Czech idiomatic expressions concerning animals. The theoretical part of the thesis establishes a definition of the term "idiom," provides various points of view on the classification, and introduces types of idiomatic expressions that can be often encountered in dictionaries that specialise in phraseology. The last chapter of the theoretical framework then focuses on idiom comprehension. The empirical part consists of a table of 160 animal idioms that were selected for the purpose of the thesis. The idioms were picked from more than ten English and Czech dictionaries. The first table offers literal meaning to each item. The first part of the analysis divides the expressions into four categories; full equivalents, partial equivalents, phraseological parallels, and non-equivalents. The second part of the analysis focuses on partial equivalents and phraseological parallels in an attempt to provide a type for each idiom to find out whether the types are the same or how they differ in English and Czech.

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je porovnání anglických a českých idiomatických výrazů týkajících se zvířat. Teoretická část se zabývá definicí pojmu "idiom", zahrnuje několik pohledů na klasifikaci idiomů a nabízí několik typů idiomatických výrazů se kterými se často setkáváme ve slovnících zaměřených na problematiku frazeologie. Poslední kapitola teoretické části se zaměřuje na porozumění idiomů. Empirická část se skládá z tabulky 160 zvířecích idiomů, které byly vybrány s ohledem na téma bakalářské práce. Tabulka byla vytvořena na základě více než deseti slovníků jak v anglickém, tak v českém jazyce. Tabulka nabízí ke každému idiomu jeho doslovný překlad v anglickém jazyce. První část analýzy rozděluje idiomy do čtyř skupin; úplné ekvivalenty, částečné ekvivalenty, frazeologické paralely, a bez-ekvivalenty. Druhá část analýzy se zaobírá typy jednotlivých idiomů z kategorie částečných ekvivalentů a frazeologických paralel ve snaze pozorovat shody či rozdíly mezi typy v anglickém a českém jazyce.
