Fear of childbirth in pregnant women: association with maternal self-esteem, autonomy and parity

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na souvislosti strachu z porodu u těhotných žen s mateřským sebehodnocením, autonomií a paritou. Cílem této práce bylo zkoumat, jaký vliv má mateřské sebehodnocení na intenzitu strachu z porodu, jak souvisí parita s intenzitou strachu z porodu a jak může autonomie ovlivňovat těsnost vztahu mezi strachem z porodu a mateřským sebehodnocením. Data pochází z projektu DOMOV. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 857 těhotných žen, které byly ve třetím trimestru těhotenství. Z výsledků hierarchické lineární regrese vyplynulo, že nižší mateřské sebehodnocení predikovalo vyšší intenzitu strachu z porodu. Dále byl potvrzen moderační efekt autonomie na vztah mezi strachem z porodu a mateřským sebehodnocením. Konkrétně z výsledků vyplývá, že při vyšší pociťované autonomii roste souvislost mezi mateřským sebehodnocením a strachem z porodu. Konečně, prvorodičky vykazovaly vyšší intenzitu strachu z porodu než vícerodičky. Výsledky byly v práci diskutovány i s ohledem na možné limity.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis focuses on fear of childbirth and its association with maternal self-esteem, autonomy, and parity. The aim of this thesis was to examine the influence of maternal self-esteem on the intensity of fear of childbirth, how parity is related to the intensity of fear of childbirth, and how autonomy can influence the relationship between fear of childbirth and maternal self-esteem. The data were obtained from the DOMOV project. The research sample consisted of 857 pregnant women, who at the time were in the third trimester of pregnancy. The results of the hierarchical linear regression showed that lower maternal self-esteem predicted a higher intensity of fear of childbirth. The results also showed that, the moderating effect of autonomý on the relationship between fear of childbirth and maternal self-esteem was confirmed. Specifically, the results show that the association between maternal self-esteem and fear of childbirth increases with higher perceived autonomy. Finally, primiparous women showed a higher intensity of fear of childbirth than multiparous women. The results were discussed in the thesis with respect to possible limits.
