Analysis of the impact of the government's economic policy on voters' preferences in the Czech Republic in 1993-2017

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o vlivu hospodářské politiky vlády na volební chování v ČR v letech 1993–2017. V teoretické části jsou rozebrány přístupy k volebnímu chování. Pozornost je soustředěna na teorii ekonomického a tematického hlasování. Poslední zmiňovaná teorie je obohacena o poznatky z behaviorální ekonomie, zejména od Bryana Caplana. V praktické části jsou za pomoci teorií ekonomického a tematického hlasování analyzovány dominantní vzorce chování voličů za jednotlivé etapy. Využito je k tomu kvalitativní analýzy dat v jednotlivých obdobích z hlediska vývoje preferencí, stavu ekonomiky a tematické agendy. Je testována hypotéza, že teorie ekonomického hlasování je vhodnější pro vysvětlení volebního chování v ČR ve zkoumaném období. Práce dochází k závěru, že teorie ekonomického hlasování je vhodná pro vysvětlení volebního chování jen pro některé etapy. V jiných etapách naopak převažuje tematické hlasování.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the influence of the government's economic policy on electoral behavior in the Czech Republic in 1993-2017. In the theoretical part, approaches to electoral behavior are analyzed. Attention is focused on the theory of economic and issue voting. The last-mentioned theory is enriched with knowledge from behavioral economics, especially from Bryan Caplan. In the practical part, the dominant behavioral patterns of voter's behavior for individual stages are analyzed using theories of economic and issue voting. It is used the qualitative analysis of data in individual periods in terms of the development of preferences, the state of the economy and the issue agenda. The hypothesis that the theory of economic voting is better suited to explain electoral behavior in the Czech Republic in the period under review is tested. The thesis concludes that the theory of economic voting is suitable for explanation of electoral behavior only for some stages. In other stages, issue voting prevails.
