Multidisciplinární aplikace letokruhového výzkumu

Abstract:

Vzhledem k tomu, že dřevo bylo základním materiálem pro lidskou populaci po celém světě, zachovalo se velké množství historických konstrukcí a archeologických nálezů. Výzkum letokruhů poskytuje obzvláště přesný způsob datování těchto dřevěných objektů. Tato metoda má ale i mnoho dalších aplikací v různých oblastech výzkumu, jako je zkoumání výběru a využití dřevin v minulosti, sledování změn vlastností dřeva v průběhu času, studium minulých lidských aktivit, paleoklimatologie a paleoekologie. Habilitační práce je sestavena z vědeckých prací zaměřených na různé aplikace dendrochronologie a nastiňuje možné budoucí výzkumné otázky v oboru. Jednotlivé vědecké práce zahrnují chronologie, které jsou tvořeny nejen použitím tradiční šířky letokruhu, ale také pomocí dalších letokruhových parametrů. Tyto chronologie jsou pak používané k zodpovězení konkrétních vědeckých otázek a testování hypotéz. Absolutně datované staleté a tisícileté standardní chronologie umožňují nejen přesně datovat dřevěné relikty z celého holocénu (např. subfosilní materiál, neolitické studny a dřevěné kostely) a kalibrovat a zlepšovat přesnost radiokarbonového datování, ale také slouží k rekonstrukci hydroklimatu střední Evropy za posledních 2000 let. Hustá síť referenčních chronologií se ukázala jako základní předpoklad vysoké úspěšnosti při určování původu dřeva. V neposlední řadě chronologie přispěly ke studiu změn struktury a vlastností dřeva v čase a časových změn v používání různých dřevin a stavební činnosti v celé Evropě. Potenciál dendrochronologie vidím zejména v inovativním výzkumu založeném na mezioborové spolupráci nejen v přírodních vědách, ale i v dalších oborech. Podle mého názoru by budoucí interdisciplinární výzkum měl dále využívat a testovat alternativní parametry letokruhu, jako jsou stabilní izotopy, kvantitativní anatomie dřeva a izotop 14C v ročním rozlišení, namísto spoléhání se na konvenční šířku letokruhu. Retrospektivní pozorování variability letokruhů poskytuje užitečné informace o změnách hustoty dřeva a v konečném důsledku i vlastností dřeva způsobených změnou klimatu a může poskytnout nové informace, které nám pomohou lépe porozumět možným změnám kvality a použitelnosti dřeva v budoucnu. Zkoumání využití dřeva v minulosti a změn vlastností dřeva v průběhu času přispívá k zachování hmotných i nehmotných aspektů kulturního dědictví, a pokud by současné lesní druhy v budoucnu byly méně dostupné, může pomoci identifikovat alternativy pro lidské využití.

Abstract:

Since wood has so long been an essential resource for human populations across the world, countless examples of archaeological and historical timbers have been preserved. Tree-ring research provides an especially precise means of dating these wooden relicts, yet the technique has many other applications in different fields of research, such as investigating wood species selection and utilization in the past, monitoring changes in the properties of wood over time, studying past human activities, palaeoclimatology and palaeoecology. I have compiled this habilitation thesis from scientific papers on diverse applications of dendrochronology and outlined possible future research questions in the field. The scientific papers include chronologies – not only from measurements of conventional tree-ring width (TRW) but also of other tree-ring parameters – used to answer specific scientific questions and test hypotheses. Annually resolved and absolutely dated multi-centennial and multi-millennial reference chronologies allow us not only to date precisely wooden relicts from throughout the Holocene (e.g., sub-fossil material, neolithic water wells and wooden churches) and calibrate and improve the accuracy of radiocarbon dating, but also to reconstruct the hydroclimate of Central Europe over the last 2,000 years. The dense network of reference chronologies has proved to be a fundamental prerequisite for a high success rate in wood provenancing. Last but not least, chronologies have contributed to studies of changes in wood structure and properties over time and temporal variations in the use of various wood species and building activities across Europe. I see the potential of dendrochronology in innovative research based on cross-disciplinary collaboration, not only in natural sciences but other fields as well. In my opinion, future interdisciplinary research should further use and test alternative tree-ring parameters such as stable isotopes, quantitative wood anatomy and 14C at annual or sub-annual resolution instead of relying on conventional tree-ring width. Retrospective observation of tree-ring variability provides useful insights into changes in wood density, and ultimately wood properties, caused by climate change and can provide new information to advance our understanding of possible changes of wood quality and usability in the future. The investigation of the uses of wood in the past and changes in wood properties over time contributes to the preservation of both tangible and intangible aspects of cultural heritage and, should current forest species become less available in the future, may help identify alternatives for human use.
