Windows in St. Barbaras Cathedral in Kutná Hora

Abstract:

Malovaná okna v chrámu sv. Barbory v Kutné Hoře vznikla na přelomu 19. a 20. století během restaurování chrámu. Tato restaurace byla velmi důležitým krokem pro zachování chrámu a dochování do dnešní doby. O vznik malovaných vitráží se zasloužil český malíř František Urban (1868 – 1919), který navrhl kartony téměř pro všechna okna. Pro páté okno v jižní lodi zhotovil karton Karel Brousek. Výrobou byl pověřen závod pro malbu na skle Jindřicha Pazdery a pražská firma Jana Kryšpína. Okna byla financována na náklad jednotlivců, spolků či institucí. Témata oken lze rozdělit do několika okruhů: biblické a historické náměty a jako připomínky skutečných osob či událostí. František Urban, který se zapsal do dějin barborského chrámu a mnoha dalších církevních i profánních staveb svými návrhy pro malovaná okna či nástěnnou výzdobu, patřil mezi první absolventy Uměleckoprůmyslové školy v Praze, kde studoval u profesora Františka Ženíška. Jeho okny pro chrám sv. Cyrila a Metoděje v Praze Karlíně se inspiroval pro první vitráže v chrámu sv. Barbory v Kutné Hoře. Na vznik dalších Urbanových oken měl vliv Alfons Mucha a Mikoláš Aleš, což jsem se ve své práci pokusila doložit komparací jejich děl.

Abstract:

The painted windows of St. Barbaras cathedral in Kutná Hora arose on the turn of 19th and 20th century during the restoration of the church. The restoration was very important for presentation and preservation of the church to this day. The Czech painter František Urban (1868 – 1919) had merit on the rise of painted window walls. He designed projects almost for all windows. Karel Brousek proposed the project for the fifth window in the south nave. Jindřich Pazderas factory for the painting on glass and Prague firm of Jan Kryšpín were entrusted with production. The windows were financed by individuals, associations or institutions. It is possible to divide the topics of windows into several coverages: biblical and historical themes and as the reminders of the real persons or events. František Urban who went down in history of St. Barbaras cathedral and many next ecclesiastic also profane buildings with his projects for painted windows or wall decoration was one of the first graduates of The School of Applied Art in Prague where he studied at professor František Ženíšek. His windows for St. Cyril and Methods cathedral in part of Prague called Karlín were inspiration source for the first Urbans window walls of St. Barbaras church in Kutná Hora. Alfons Mucha and Mikoláš Aleš had influence on the rise of the following Urbans windows which I tried to support by comparison of their works in my project.
