Effect of competitiveness in violent video games on arousal and aggressive behaviour

Abstract:

Téma počítačových her je v oblasti psychologického výzkumu již dlouhodobě zavedené. Drtivá většina pozornosti byla věnována násilným počítačovým hrám a otázce, zda mohou přispívat k vyššímu agresivnímu chování. Na to poukazuje řada studií. Častým problémem těchto výzkumů jsou však opakující se metodologické nedostatky. Nejčastějším problémem je volba nestejných herních titulů pro navození odlišných experimentálních podmínek. Různé tituly jsou totiž mnohdy odlišné i v jiných charakteristikách než jen v přítomnosti násilí – třeba v úrovni soutěživosti. Samotný faktor soutěživosti byl v minulosti zkoumán, výsledky však nejsou zcela konzistentní a ani v těchto studiích se nepodařilo ošetřit klíčové limity. Tento experiment na předešlé výzkumy navazuje, zohledňuje zmíněná omezení a kontroluje i mediující faktory. V předkládaném mezisubjektovém designu participanti (N=80) hráli buď soutěživou, nebo nesoutěživou variantu téže hry. Manipulace s těmito variantami byla na rozdíl od předchozích studií úspěšná. Během hraní byla monitorována srdeční aktivita jako fyziologický marker arousalu a bezprostředně po hře byli participanti dotazováni na pocity nahněvanosti. Závěrem bylo zkoumáno, zda se participanti v závislosti na variantě hry chovali agresivněji. Bylo zjištěno, že soutěživá varianta hry hráčům signifikantně zvyšovala arousal (p < .001, Cohenovo d = 1.08) a že arousal byl zároveň signifikantním mediátorem vlivu soutěživé hry na agresivní chování (p = .021, B = 0.15). To je v souladu s klasickou teorií transferu excitace i s GAM. Tato práce doplňuje mezery v dosavadních výzkumech a dokládá důležitost faktoru soutěživosti, který by neměl být opomíjen při vyvozování závěrů o vlivu násilných her (které jsou přitom většinou také soutěživé) na následné agresivní chování.

Abstract:

The topic of computer games has long been well established in the field of psychological research. The vast majority of attention has been paid to violent computer games and the question whether they can contribute to higher aggressive behaviour. To this date, several studies points out this conclusion, but a common problem in these findings is recurrent methodological deficiencies. The most frequent problem is the choice of unequal game titles to induce different experimental conditions. Different titles are often different in many other characteristics than by the presence of violence itself – for example, in the level of competition. The competitive factor itself has been investigated in the past, but the results are not completely consistent and even in these studies the key limits could not be addressed. This experiment builds on the previous research, considering the mentioned limitations and even controlling for the mediating factors. In the submitted inter-subject design, the participants (N=80) played either a competitive or non-competitive version of the same game. Manipulation of these variants was successful, unlike previous studies. During the game, heartrate was monitored as a physiological marker of arousal and immediately after the game, the participants were asked about feelings of anger. Finally, it was examined whether the participants behaved more aggressively depending on the version of the game. It was found that the competitive type of the game significantly increased the players' arousal (p<.001, Cohen’s d=1.08) and that arousal was also a significant mediator of the influence of the competitive game on aggressive behaviour (p=.021, B=0.15). This is in line with the classical theory of transfer excitation as well as with the GAM. This work thus fills in the gaps in existing research and illustrates the importance of the competition factor, which should not be neglected when drawing conclusions about the influence of violent games (which are mostly competitive too) on subsequent aggressive behaviour.
