Writing a Woman´s Life: Revising the Genre of Autobiography

Abstract:

The thesis deals with autobiographical fiction as part of American women's literary tradition. The aim of this thesis is to show how three American women writers - Gertrude Stein, Maya Angelou and Maxine Hong Kingston - enrich the genre of autobiography as they revise concepts related to women's issues in their autobiographical fiction. The theoretical part of the thesis provides a background to the genre of female autobiography: it describes the genre, its typical features and themes and then outlines a brief thematic development of American women's autobiography, highlighting the decade of the 1970's as a turning point for interest from the point of view of scholars. The analytical part provides analyses of Stein's The Autobiography of A. B. Toklas, Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Kingston's The Woman Warrior. The analyses demonstrate that the three writers revise the genre of autobiography in different ways. Among other, Stein provides a type of "modernist" autobiography. Angelou speaks for herself and simultaneously for all Afro-American women as she addresses several controversial themes. Kingston introduces talk-story tradition and brings in Chinese elements. All three writers contribute a positive image of woman as writer and member of society and provide insights into the lives of women from different ethnic backgrounds.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá žánrem autobiografie, který je součástí ženské literární tradice. Cílem práce je poukázat na to, jak americké spisovatelky - Gertrude Stein, Maya Angelou a Maxine Hong Kingston obohatily žánr autobiografie na základě revize konceptů souvisejících s problematikou žen ve svých dílech. Teoretická část práce poskytuje pozadí k žánru ženské autobiografie: zaměřuje se na popis žánru, jeho charakteristických znaků a témat, poskytuje stručný náhled do tematického vývoje žánru americké ženské autobiografie a zdůrazňuje sedmdesátá léta minulého století, jež byly zlomovým bodem, který zapříčinil zvýšený zájem k tomuto žánru ze strany akademických představitelů. Analytická část se zaměřuje na analýzy děl The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas od Steinové, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings od Angelou a The Woman Warrior od Kingstonové a poukazuje na to, jak tyto spisovatelky odlišně revidovaly žánr ženské autobiografie. Steinová přináší příklad "moderní" autobiografie. Angelou ve své autobiografii promlouvá za sebe a zároveň za všechny afroamerické ženy poukazujíce na několik pro ně kontroverzních témat. Kingstonová čtenáře seznamuje s tradicí "talk-story" a přináší do žánru čínské prvky. Každá z nich přispívá k pozitivnímu obrazu ženy jako spisovatelky a členky společnosti a poskytuje nahlédnutí do života ženy pocházející z různého etnika.
