Economic determinants of internal European migration after 2004 - the case of Germany

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá determinanty vnitro evropské migrace po roce 2004, se zaměřením na Německo, zemi s absolutně největším počtem imigrantů v EU. K tomu je využita regresní analýza panelových dat 26 států Evropské unie za období 10 let. V práci jsou sestaveny dva gravitační modely, základní a rozšířený, se závislou proměnnou míra migrace. V modelech jsou zastoupeny ekonomické, demografické a geografické vysvětlující proměnné. Cílem práce je zjistit, které determinanty jsou nejvýznamnějšími a zároveň nejvlivnějšími činiteli migrace v této oblasti, se zacílením na Spolkovou republiku Německo. Dále také potvrdit či vyvrátit hypotézu, o významnosti všech ekonomických proměnných a také dílčí hypotézu, že hrubý domácí produkt na obyvatele v cílové zemi je nejvlivnější ekonomický determinant. Výsledkem analýzy práce je, že ekonomické faktory nejsou významné v celém svém rozsahu, vzhledem k nevýznamnosti vlivu hrubého domácího produktu ve zdrojové zemi. Stejně tak není možné potvrdit dílčí hypotézu, jelikož ekonomickou proměnnou s největším vlivem není hrubý domácí produkt v cílové zemi, ale míra nezaměstnanosti v zemi zdrojové. Zbylé ekonomické determinanty jako jsou výdaje na sociální ochranu v cílové zemi mají nevýznamný vliv. Z neekonomických proměnných mají významný vliv populace v zemi zdrojové i přijímací a míra urbanizace. V čase neměnné determinanty vzdálenost, společné hranice a jazyk není možné interpretovat.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with determinants of internal European migration after 2004, focusing on Germany, a country with the highest number of migrants in the EU. For that purpose, it applies a regression analysis of panel data generated by 26 European countries over the period of 10 years. The thesis presents two gravity models - basic and enhanced, with a dependant variable parameter of migration rate. The models comprise economic, demographic, and geographic explaining variables. The goal of the thesis is to find out which determinants are the most important and the most influential factors of migration at the same time in this area, with a focus on the Federal Republic of Germany. Furthermore, to support or refute a hypothesis on the significance of all economic variables. Another goal is to response to a partial hypothesis that gross domestic product per inhabitant in the receiving country is the most significant economic determinant. The analysis shows that economic factors are not important to their whole extent regarding the low influence of gross domestic product in the sending country. Also, the partial hypothesis can´t be proven since the most influential economic variable is not gross domestic product per inhabitant in the receiving country but the unemployment rate in the sending country. Other economic determinants such as social protection expenditures in receiving country are of small significance. Important non-economic variables are population in the receiving as well as sending countries and urbanization rate. Determinants that are constant over time, e.g. a distance, joint border and language, are not interpretable.
