Wars in Latin America; just a playground of foreign powers?

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci si kladu za cíl rozebrat moderní ozbrojené konflikty v Latinské Americe v 19. a 20. století s ohledem na místní kritický přístup k historii a mezinárodním vztahům, inspirovaný marxizmem. Po úvodní části věnované marxistické škole mezinárodních vztahů, teorii dependence a teorii zástupné války analyzuji čtyři vybrané válečné konflikty v regionu: válku trojí aliance, tichomořskou válku o ledek, válku o Acre a válku o Chaco. Mou výzkumnou otázkou je zodpovědět, zda se jednalo o zástupné války, tj. strany do konfliktu vehnal cizí aktér, nebo o běžná střetnutí válčících stran. Závěrem mé práce je tedy podložené tvrzení, zda do konfliktů Latinskou Ameriku vháněly cizí mocnosti či nadnárodní korporace, jak je přesvědčena velká část místních intelektuálů, anebo nikoliv.

Abstract:

The objective of my thesis is to analyse modern armed conflicts in Latin America in 19th and 20th century, with regard to the region's critical approach to history and international relations, inspired by Marxism. Following an introductory part focused on Marxist school of international relations, dependency theory proxy-war theory, four selected regional conflicts are analysed: War of the Triple Alliance, War of the Pacific, the Acre War and the Chaco War. My research question is to answer whether these were proxy wars, i.e. the belligerents were dragged into conflict by external actor, or mere clashes of warring parties. Therefore, the conclusion of my thesis is a statement on whether Latin American conflicts have been guided by foreign powers or multinational corporations, as is the conviction of many intellectuals in the region, or not.
