Intercultural communication in the business environment

Abstract:

Předmětem bakalářské práce je interkulturní komunikace se zaměřením na Čínu. Práce identifikuje a zkoumá hlavní problémy komunikace v čínském prostředí z pohledu českých manažerů. Výzkum je založen na metodách dotazníkového šetření, rozhovoru a analýzy dat. Teoretický rámec práce vychází především z Hofstedeho konceptu kulturních dimenzí. Dle zjištění se do interkulturní komunikace nejvíce promítají rozdíly v oblastech individualismu a uspořádání moci. Jako primární překážku komunikace však čeští manažeři vnímají jazyk, a to i v případech, kdy ovládají mandarínštinu a mají za sebou již dlouhodobý výjezd. Získané výsledky poukazují na úzkou provázanost čínského jazyka s dalšími kulturními specifiky a obecně vysokou míru rozdílnosti, s níž se manažeři při interkulturní komunikaci musejí vypořádat. V dané situaci je vhodné nepodceňovat přípravu na výjezd a snažit se manažery na čínské prostředí co nejvíce adaptovat.

Abstract:

The subject of this bachelor’s thesis is the intercultural communication with a focus on China. The thesis identifies and examines main problems of communication in the Chinese environment as viewed by Czech managers. The research is based on methods of a questionnaire survey, an interview and a data analysis. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based chiefly on the Hofstede’s concept of cultural dimensions. According to the findings, intercultural communication is affected most by differences in areas of individualism and structure of power. However, Czech managers perceive the language as the primary barrier of communication. This is the case also with managers who command Mandarin and who had been in China for a long assignment. Achieved results point to a close link between the Chinese language and other cultural specifics and to a generally high degree of differentness with which managers must cope with in intercultural communication. In this situation, it is advisable not to underestimate the preparation for assignments and try to adapt managers to the Chinese environment as much as possible.
