Optimisation of user digital identity gathering process

Abstract:

Digitálna identita je dôležitý koncept používaný v digitálnom svete. je to základ pre procesy identifikácie, autentizácia a autorizácie. Základný aspekt digitálnej identity je jej stupeň dôveryhodnosti. V medzinárodných výskumných infraštruktúrach musí byť takáto identita dôkladne overená. Avšak, namiesto ustanovenia novej digitálnej identity sa infraštruktúra môže spoľahnúť a používať niektoré z už existujúcich digitálnych identít užívateľa. V našej práci analyzujeme digitálnu identity ako koncept a jej vlastnosť dôveryhodnosti. Zameriavame sa hlavne na jej použitie v prostredí medzinárodných výskumných infraštruktúr operujúcich v oblasti prírodných vied. Diskutujeme rôzne typy digitálnych identít, ich silné a slabé vlastnosti a ich aplikovateľnosť v tejto doméne. Taktiež sa zaoberáme problematikou procesu spojenia internej reprezentácie užívateľa s nejakou z externých (existujúcich) digitálnych identít. V rámci analýzy uvádzame popis existujúcej infraštruktúry a rozoberáme návrh a implementáciu procesov spojených s digitálnou identitou. Hlavným výsledkom našej práce je zostavenie sady doporučení pre vybudovanie takejto infraštruktúry, primárne zameraných na prácu s digitálnou identitou. Konkrétne diskutujeme výber správneho typu existujúcich digitálnych identít, vhodné komunikačné protokoly, budovanie prostredia, návrh procesu vytvorenia asociácie medzi užívateľskou reprezentáciou v infraštruktúre a externou identitou, a dokumentáciou pre užívateľov a služby spolupracujúce s infraštruktúrou.

Abstract:

Digital identity is an important concept used in a digital world. It is a base for enabling processes of identification, authentication, and authorization. An essential aspect of the digital identity is the level of trust it expresses. In an internationally provided research infrastructure, the identity has to be strongly verified. However, instead of creating a new identity with performing verification tasks, the infrastructure can rely on already existing user identities. In this thesis, we analyze the digital identity and concept of its trust level. We focus on its usage in the environment of international life science infrastructures. We discuss different types of digital identities, their strong and weak points, and their applicability in the chosen domain. We also analyze the process of associating the external identity with user representation in the target environment, both from its owner and consumer perspective. We inspect an already existing infrastructure and evaluate the used approach. The primary result of this work is a set of guidelines that will help the reader to select the correct type of external digital identities the environment can rely on, what communication protocols to use, how to build the environment, how to design the association process, and what documentation to provide for users and relying services.
