Kmenové buňky jsou definované jako buňky se schopností sebeobnovy a schopné vytvořit další typy buněk. Mohou být rozděleny podle jejich diferenciačního potenciálu na buňky pluripotentní, multipotentní a unipotentní. Pluripotentní embryonální buňky dávají vznik všem třem zárodečným listům. Stem cells are defined as cells that are self-renewing and capable of producing other types of cells. They can be divided according to their potentional for differentiation as pluripotent, multipotent and unipotent. Pluripotent stem cells can give rise to cells of all three germ layers.
