Influence of official development assistance on SDG 5.5: Comparative study of Ethiopia and Bangladesh

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vlivy a překážkami, které působí na politickou participaci žen ve dvou vybraných rozvojových zemích, v Etiopii a Bangladéši. Práce zejména zkoumá, jaký má na celý fenomén vliv oficiální rozvojová pomoc (ODA) a jestli je možné potvrdit její vliv statisticky. Zjištěný vliv nejen ODA, ale i dalších proměnných s účinkem na politickou participaci žen ve vybraných zemích, je následně komparován. Téma je zasazeno do teoretického rámce liberálního feminismu, jemuž se, společně s vývojem řešení politického postavení žen, věnuje první kapitola. Druhá kapitola se soustředí na ODA zaměřenou na rovnost žen a mužů a posílení postavení žen. Třetí analyzuje postavení žen ve vybraných zemích a překážky, kterým musí čelit při vstupu do politiky. Čtvrtá kapitola aplikuje metodu lineární regrese na zjištění vztahu mezi počtem žen v parlamentu v obou zemích, ODA a dalších vlivů a překážek, které bylo možné kvantifikovat a výsledky následně komparuje.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the barriers and factors impacting the political participation of women within two specific developing countries – Ethiopia and Bangladesh. The thesis is focused on the effect of the Official Development Aid (ODA) and its statistical significance. The impact of ODA as well as that of the other regressors on the political participation in each country is then compared. The topic is backed by theoretical findings of liberal feminism together with the evolution of women’s political participation in the first chapter. The second chapter then focuses on ODA targeting specifically the gender equality and women’s empowerment. The topic of the third chapter is to analyse women's empowerment in Ethiopia and Bangladesh and the obstacles women face when trying to be politically active. The last, fourth chapter then applies the linear regression method to find out the relations between the number of women in parliament in both countries and ODA, among other relevant factors and barriers that were possible to quantify. The results of linear regression models for both countries are then compared.
